Mangaluru, May 15: In a shocking development, as many as 16 including 15 passengers who came from Dubai on May 12, tested positive for the deadly coronavirus infection on Friday, May 15.
Twelve men and four women were tested positive on Friday. Fifteen among them are Dubai returnees while one has contracted infection from a coronavirus-positive contact.
The men to be tested positive are aged 27, 35, 37, 38, and 39 each, two people aged 40, one aged 45, and 71, 76 and 81 each. A 6-year-old boy is also among the infected. The women who were tested positive are aged 27, 33 and 69 each. All are Dubai returnees. A 68-year-old woman from Suratkal also tested positive thus taking the total count to 16.
The total count of active cases in the district has now suddenly leap-frogged to 50 in which 29 are active cases. As many as 16 persons have recovered and been discharged, and five deaths have occurred so far.
It may be recalled, on May 12, the first special flight landed at Mangaluru International Airport from Dubai with 177 passengers including 40 pregnant women and 2 infants on board.
As per the standard operating procedure to be observed by all foreign returnees, the passengers were screened for Covid-19 virus. Further, after completing the formalities, the returnees were taken in state- run buses in batches for 14-day institutional quarantine in hotels and other places in the coastal city.
