Mangaluru: 16 including 15 Dubai returnees test corona-positive on May 15

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (AM)

Mangaluru, May 15: In a shocking development, as many as 16 including 15 passengers who came from Dubai on May 12, tested positive for the deadly coronavirus infection on Friday, May 15.

Twelve men and four women were tested positive on Friday. Fifteen among them are Dubai returnees while one has contracted infection from a coronavirus-positive contact.

The men to be tested positive are aged 27, 35, 37, 38, and 39 each, two people aged 40, one aged 45, and 71, 76 and 81 each. A 6-year-old boy is also among the infected. The women who were tested positive are aged 27, 33 and 69 each. All are Dubai returnees. A 68-year-old woman from Suratkal also tested positive thus taking the total count to 16.

The total count of active cases in the district has now suddenly leap-frogged to 50 in which 29 are active cases. As many as 16 persons have recovered and been discharged, and five deaths have occurred so far.

It may be recalled, on May 12, the first special flight landed at Mangaluru International Airport from Dubai with 177 passengers including 40 pregnant women and 2 infants on board.

As per the standard operating procedure to be observed by all foreign returnees, the passengers were screened for Covid-19 virus. Further, after completing the formalities, the returnees were taken in state- run buses in batches for 14-day institutional quarantine in hotels and other places in the coastal city.

There was no social distance in the flight. flight was full. Why authorities conduct social distance once the passengers disembark the flight? This is nothing but a drama .

The debate here is whether the decision to bring them wrong or right.
Bringing them is right instead of letting them in an alien land with no guarantee of future stay for many who have come back on this flight.
In an aircraft compressed cool air gets circulated which makes infections spreading to all the passengers including flight pursers & from them to any others they come into contact as well.
Wearing face masks or hand gloves or sanitiser won't help as they are not foolproof even social distancing in any airport or aircraft is useless.
If none of them were tested in India then they would have or wouldn't have shown any symptoms & might not have known they had it unless their antibody test was done later.
Improve your immunity is what our Indian doctor had advised since January, he had said no lock down will end the threat of virus no matter whether you wear a mask or gloves or use sanitiser. He had said you are just changing the date from this day to future. He too is in favor of creating herd immunity which only can prevent second or third wave of infections.

... either positive or negative, how long will the host countries will take care of foreigners in this present situation. Already many gulf countries are reeling under severe economic pressure. If India can send many medical professionals to middle-east to deal with corona pandemic, same medical professionals can also treat the infected gulf returnees in India also. Anyway, we have to learn to live with the chinese virus !

    Modiji,

We were told before boarding evacuation flights, COVID-19 instant test will be conducted...and those with negative results are allowed to board the plane....which obviously NOT HAPPENED....

If you don't conduct this Rapid COVID-19 test on passengers before boarding the plane...you are risking all passengers in the plane for COVID-19...

Unless COVID-19 rapid test is arranged at departing airports....better STOP these flights...

Again before ordering Special flights ...you must have arranged this...I thought you did...but OBVIOUSLY NOT...

Before jumping to any conclusions...see if these Positives are not FALSE Positive...

Also people ....even if these 20 people are really Positive ....most likely all of them will survive....unless they have history of previous respiratory ailments....only we should be careful they don't spread COVID-19 to others...

    DON'T PANIC....

    ...Tak...Takk...

Indian Council of Medical Research has rejected the Rapid Covid-19 test based on Anti bodies, in the current kits available from China.
    Only Korean Kits are promising.

Each flights originating from different countries. Doctors & pharmacists based in that country should follow the guidelines of that country.

India does not have any role here, other than enrolling some local doctor or hospital.

But, Swab test with 2-3 days gap, based on the capacity of the lab, is only option now.

Flying in close contact with infected people is high risk. Social distancing is difficult to maintain within the aircraft. There is a possibility that many more will test positive as they have come in close contact with 15 positive cases.
In USA, the cases increased after people returned from Europe/Cruises.

There are so many chances of getting the virus from the moment you step out of the house in Dubai to come home to Mangalore. Starting from the lift you catch out of your apartment, the taxi, the airport trolley, the toilets, the handles of the airplane luggage compartment, while crossing aisles in a crowded plane, queuing up for immigration, baggage handlers at Dubai and India. Even if you were virus free when you left UAE, if one person on the flight is positive without showing symptoms, it can easily spread in confined spaces. By the time you reach the hotel room, you might have touched your face or eyes or nose, even to wipe sweat off, thus transferring the virus from the contact on to yourself. The best thing they can do now is keep eating healthy to keep up their immune system to help it fight the virus.

Otherwise why so many cases within 1 day. Also there is no need to bring luggage while coming on evacuation flights. Just allow people to come with 10 kg luggage. No handbag should be allowed. Govt. Of India should provide test kits to traveller's at origin. Charge them for the test. No eatable should be provided. Traveler should arrange their food and water. to avoid risk.

If the rapid blood tests which are not giving proper status of the infectionon of a patient, why do they conduct such tests and put common man into confusion... ?? In that place, they could arrange the rapid covid tests and give the results on the spot. One more thing I am surprised here, so long they were in Dubai and they were OK. As soon as they landed how they got infected? Even in the rapid blood tests, out of all some of the tests would have shown positive in Dubai only?? Secondly, in USA, they must be doing rapid covid tests. So, Lan sir was saying out of confidence.... Systems vary from gulf countries to European countries...

No one tests positive, If he gets Corona virus in a 3 hour flight.
It takes 5 to 14 days for any person to test positive.

Even if you test a person, who got Virus 3 hours back, His report will show Negative.
Only after 14 days, His report will come Positive.

So, you can expect many Positive case from passengers of the flight, who tested Negative now, in Next 14 days.

Also, Sweepers & airport staff, who helped in Baggage, may have got Virus, as Baggage surface may had virus. But, it will come out in a test after 14 days.

Virus needs to get into the body to test positive

Lungs has receptor. Once Virus gets in through receiptor, it multiplies. That takes 5 1o 14 days.
Only after that, when you have large number of virus in the body, Covid-19 test will become Positve.

So, if you test immediately after getting virus or within 4 days, Test may come Negative.

It requires 5 to 14 days for Virus to spread & Test to Show positive. Safe test is test after 12-14 days.

80% of people will never have symptoms. But, they will be having Virus.

They are called "Silent Spreaders". They will be spreading virus to Old people, parents, wife, Children, Neighbours, Colleagues in Office, Grocery shop customers etc.
But, they will never show the symptoms of Corona virus. If tested they will be shown Corona positive.

It is suggested to get tested after 12-14 days after getting contact with Corona virus infected person. Because, otherwise Test will come Negative.

Sawti, looks like you have a job that pays few lacs rupees a month, not everyone is lucky like you.
There are people who went to visit family in Dubai, there are people who went on business/holiday trips that they could not keep paying for hotel and food there. There are also people who lost jobs and trying to survive with help from others. They are those desperate to come back home other than some expectant mothers who want to be with their mothers particularly if they are first time to be mothers. You can not blame them.
    If you want to blame someone, blame those;
    1. Who are responsible to make sure they are tested negative before boarding the flight.
    2. Those who are responsible for strict quarantine,
    3. Those who made ANNOUNCEMENT of free flights, free meals and free accommodation for quarantine for 14 days.
    4. Those allowed the virus to enter India from America (to Mumbai to all the way to Ahmadabad) because they wanted to say "Namaste" to Trump.
    5. Those people who are responsible for the well being of citizens but failed to stop International passengers to walk freely from the Airports since Mid February without putting them under quarantine.
    6. Those people who are responsible for the well being of poor and helpless citizens of India and small businesses in India (which can not survive 15 days of lock down without help from the government) and took 50 days to ANNOUNCE any help that too after pressure from the opposition party.
It's always better to open our eyes and see the things without any communal/political glasses instead of asking others to see for us. It is also better to use our own brain to think rather asking someone to think for us.

These people are also responsible for development of those countries. Its joke that not a single NRI has mediclaim insurance.

Out of 177 people in the flight 20 people are positive for Corona virus (15 DK + 5 Udupi).
More sample reports will come in next 3 days.

Since, within fight everyone was breathing same air, from the A/C, All 177 people needs to be put into Quarantine.

Once you get disease, for Test to show positive it takes 14-21 days. So, everyone should be in 28 days Quarantine Minimum.

Unfortunately, First flight had Pregnant ladies, Old age people & children. Who all have less immune system.

We should not allow more deaths in DK & Udupi in coming days.

Raj, I am sure you're living in a well. You think DK is self sufficient in every aspect? It is true that DK's known/detected cases from Gulf returnees. What about people coming to DK from other parts of Karnataka/India?? Can't they bring the cases to DK, wait and see what happens when the lock-down lifted completely.
The world is so dependent with each other and that's why we got this virus even though DK is far from China. The first corona case/death in India was on the 28th of January and the person got it in China. The another IT professional from Bangalore brought it from China as well.
What about those people who arrived in Mumbai from America and traveled to Ahmadabad(to say Namaste to Trump) spreading to everyone along the way. What about those people who arrived in March for the TJ congregation in Delhi and infected everyone in there?
At the end of the day, we could have got that from somewhere because the government was busy with some other important things than the safety of it's citizens. The infection could have been negligible if ban on the international passengers (or quarantining them on arrival) slapped earlier when Congress leaders were demanding.

I completely agree with you about this luggage issue. I lived in few countries and I am responsible for my luggage when I am traveling, even when my wife was pregnant and we had 1 year old other child with us.
If you're coming from DUBAI (3 hours flight, isn't it?) in an emergency (for example, delivery of baby in India) why the h--l you want to bring the luggage that you can not handle yourself?? Don't we get things in India? Why you always expect there will be somebody who will help me?
I expect lots of dislikes but it is my opinion. For 3 hours flight, you're complaining. We have traveled to India from Dublin, Miami, Osaka, Cairns (in Queensland, Australia) with infants when we have to board more than 3 flights and countless hours waiting in the airport for connecting flights (most of the time overnight in Bangalore) but never complained about luggage. it is my responsibility and if I can't handle that much luggage, i would not bring it.

Dear Sir, same thoughts are mine too!! Don't worry about the disagrees... Facts are true and those who hit disagree never want to accept the truth. I said in my last comment, bring important things which are absolutely necessary. If you can't carry 20kgs.... Divide into two parts...10/10 or 10/5.....concentrate more on yourself and the baby within you... which is important during such emergency situation.. This is not holiday package.. There may be helpers inside but, outside the airport what to be done..??. There may arise such situations you yourself have to lift the baggage.....Think and proceed...

Ok lets relax guyz, lets not panic. Number of 15 out 177 barely small portion. Please make their immunity stronger, they need to intake vit c drinks, tulsi leaves, lemonginger tea, fresh juices, meditation etc and good protein diet can do work like magic, within 10 days they ll be negative.

But it all depends on healthcare staffs, how they deal with them, in kerala i heard these patients aregetting counselling and various kashayas etc.

One more flight is scheduled, so lets expect now onky another 15+, lets accept the pandemic and start shielding ourselves.

Please anyrelatives of these passengers don't go to quarantine lodges, kindly meet them after 30 days.

All 177 people TEST report has not come out.

Wait for next 3 days to know, how many more will add to already positive 20 people.

Also, 177 people in the flight, breathing same air as these 20 people, need to go through Covid-19 test again after 14 days.

Many of them, who were negative, will become positive, because they got Corona virus in flight.

These returnees can be quarantined in less populated islands of India. They can be lodged in inhabited islands too. Later they can be brought here. The affected ones needing admission in hospitals can be ferried from those parts where they are lodged.

Today if our govt wouldnt have brought them back opposition leaders and many people would have questioned. Dakshina Kannada District needs to re-declared as Red Zone & Lockdown for next 1 mont till June 30 needs to be implemented.

More flights from Gulf are coming next week. Surely, DK will cross 15 active cases, which is criteria for declaring a district Red Zone & for strict lockdown.

Seal down needs to be implemented in the areas having Quarantine facilities & Area around Wenlock.

There are multiple logistical issues related to Quarantine.

    - Where is space for Quarantine facility
    - Budget for the District administration for logistics

Can we handle 50,000 people in one place, for Quarantine?

Shocking indeed. Will these numbers continue to rise? I may be mistaken, but it appeared that the Dubai originating flights were prime carriers of the coronavirus before the lockdown, not only here in Mangalore but elsewhere. Some people fear that the latest flights will drastically spread the coronavirus infection. Our local ministers have worked valiantly to prevent the spread. What will be the next step?

I think this is the risk we have taken to bring back stranded Indians abroad and this is the price that we are paying. On one hand people who live here have observed lock down causing huge individual losses to maintain situation under control, now suddenly every thing gone for a toss. All the looses and efforts will go in vain putting crores of residence in danger. I am not suggesting we should not have brought back them, they are also indians like you and me but what i am saying is we should have confirmed corona negative before bringing them back. Not sure whether due procedure has been followed.

Do we have a choice ? No.

Let's accept that they are our people, they belong here. A relief is that Corona is not as deadly as Plague, Polio, TB or Cancer. Corona is just a flue as there are several types of Flu in the world. Treated and kept in quarantine, patients get well. Effects of Corona are hyped beyond limit by Europeans and Americans. I am sure we will beat the disease since we have the immunity due to vaccinations we received.

We Indians have more fatalities through rape, acid attack, infanticide, poisonous gas leak or tragedies like Endosulfan. Corona accounts for 3.3% fatality of the positive cases.
