Mangaluru: High court stays demolition of central market building

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 6: The state high court, which took up a public interest litigation (PIL) questioning the decision of the city corporation to demolish the central market building on Tuesday May 5, issued stay order against the demolition of the said building.

The city corporation and the district administration had decided to demolish the central market building and replace it with a building having modern facilities. They were concerned at the fact that the old building did not support the social distancing concept needed to regulate spread of coronavirus infection. The wholesalers at the central market were shifted to Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) facility at Baikampady.

Advocate A S Ponnappa, Latif Badagannur and Akbar Pasha presented the case on behalf of the petitioners.

Dear readers, I am writing in short. but very important thing to Know by the educated public of Mangalore is that our Governmant system or Political system is very lazy made by Bjp. Bjp goes then Congress can run very smoothly. Don't give vote to Bjp anytime at any cost. I pray that this new project to be closed and all the businessmen plaease fail them and see that all the retailers are back with the new market and new hopes... GOOD LUCK

For any change protests will be there always. There are cases pending for 50 years ,but courts happily a cepts new cases.Judeges know that by the time the cases are decided they will be retired or dead. If courts wants to control every thing,no need to have govts.Waste of money on election .it is time to draw lakshman raksha limiting the the courts in governance. Elected bodies are supreme.courts like any other person / institutions can give advice only and they can not rule the country

Pathetic decision by district admin and MCC. They have build state of art markets at Urwa, Kavoor and Bejai. Apart from Bejai, Urwa and Kavoor market r locked and unutilised for a long time, not even inaugurated.Central Market demolition and new construction will b lile owning another white elephant at d tax payers cost. Set right wat can be at this time rather than building new one. Kadri market constn will take another 2 years for completion of construction and another 3 years for inauguration. All d best to MCC. Go well all.

you complain about lack of developement.
when some action is bieng taken, you approach the court and get it stayed.

what are we doing here exactly?
Will the court now venture into policy matters too?
If so, why do we need a govt.?

Let the Courts run the nation too.

Govts are accountable after five years. But courts aren't.
    Remember that.

    Satish,
Courts decide according to the laws duly adopted by Parliament and do not override them; if they do, they are accountable to the final judicial authority - the Supreme Court. If you challenge the courts you have no democracy, only dictatorship. Let the administration duly follow the law and give due process -if not the officials are accountable to the law of the land, including being thrown out of office, come election time or being sacked if they are unelected officials. Which regime do you prefer? Democratic governance and rule of law, or dictatorship?.

Is it confirmed in writing that the authorities will re-build a nicer, cleaner market complex once the present market is demolished ? What if they decide to later build another skyscraper instead that sucks all the water, electricity, parking and other resources of our city ?

Just putting a question out there as I don't know if the authorities have confirmed that ONLY a new market will come up in the area where the current one stood.

Although I do not agree with the decision of the high court in the case of demolition of the central market. I certainly agree that it would have been a place for unwanted elements if the Mangalore smart city corporation does not start the work. See the fate of the old bus stand at Vishwa Bhavan, Hampankatta. A place which was brimming activity with buses plying and restaurants working was demolished. It was promised that a modern shopping complex will be built. Now it is almost 25 years and space is empty. People park their vehicles there and a prime place is wasted. The area around it like the old Vishwa Bhavan or the woodside hotel has become malls. But the old bus stand has become a dumping ground- because it belongs to the government and our local leaders and commissioners completed their duty, got promoted and went away

It took the administration 10 years to build a simple flyover at pump well and many years to rebuild the lady Goshen hospital. What about the central market. People should see that the central market demolished and rebuilt expeditiously and not on a 10- 15-year plan .By that time Mangalore would have changed and the market might have become irrelevant as eCommerce sets in

Now I know 1 thing we have some uneducated lawyers too who file pils. Mangalore central market was 0 useless it was if they could build a new one with better facilities and parking it would be good for the sellers only as they would have better shops. In the present market there is no proper ventilation everywhere on the floor there is spoilt and smashed vegetables. Even while walking we should think and decide which slab to walk on the ground is not level which brings a lot of problems for old people

Post COVID scenerio is different. Need proper planning to rebuild the market. Just spending public money to rebuild the market w ithout proper plan is no use. Now there are many important decision should be taken by MCC. They should give more importance to health care. MCC don't have money to white wash (forget about paint) the govt. Hospital.
    It's pathetic.

Actually alternate shops at places like Alake,Bejai and Urva Market should have been provided to the shopkeepers before taking a decision to demolish and rebuild the central market.Everything was done in a wrong way at the wrong time!!

When government is trying to better facilities few individuals want to live in unclean dungen atmosphere. Matter is subjudice and can be appealed. We need to demolish this old building. Eben electricity cables are hanging out openly. Its dangerous if buildimg gets grounded. Few vested interests with myopic view are endangering lives of many. A ground report is being submitted on why thid building needs to be demolished. High Court will send their representative to check fact finding report on which this stay can be vacated
