Six from Mumbai reach Udupi in ambulance, one hospitalised, others quarantined

Udupi, Apr 14: Six people, reportedly travelling from Mumbai in an ambulance, to get one person admitted at Manipal KMC hospital, reached here on Tuesday, April 14. The patient was admitted to district hospital and five others were kept under 28 days quarantine at SDM College, Udyavar.

Deputy commissioner (DC) G Jagadeesh said in a news release that six people left in ambulance from Mumbai to Udupi without permission along with a patient on April 13. They had begun their journey from Mumbai on April 13 at 7 pm and reached for treatment of the patient in Manipal KMC on April 14.

Besides the driver and the patient, there were four assistants in the ambulance. KMC hospital after examination informed the district administration. Those in the ambulance had not obtained prior permission from the government or authority to arrive from Mumbai to Manipal. The patient was then admitted in district hospital and the rest were kept under 28 days quarantine at SDM College, Udyavar.

The entire medical expenses will be borne by the concerned people. Police personnel have taken custody of the vehicle, the DC stated.

    The ambulance and people arrived without prior approval of authorities.
    Were there no check-points along the long way from Mumbai to Udupi/Manipal?

    As per report it is the hospital that reported this matter to the District Administration. Does that mean the police at check points allowed free movement possibly because it's an ambulance?

    We in Mumbai, have premium hospitals, run by eminent medical professionals.... Transfering patients from Mumbai to Manipal is crazy and ridiculous, especially during this pandemic, which is raging in our nation....

    If patient has serious health condition maybe lung, kidney, or heart condition, then accompanying patient party definitely HAS the Corona virus...is that what this 28 day quarantine means???? Does not make sense.

    Treatment in Mumbai Hospitals very expensive. If you visit A grade hospitals like KMC then you have spend 5 times more than KMC hospital. That is why people prefer to come to Mangalore, Udupi for treatment. We have good doctors and good A grade hospitals.
