Dubai: KNRI chief Praveen Shetty seeks repatriation of Kannadigas

Dubai, Apr 13: Karnataka NRI (KNRI) Forum of India has written to MP and BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel to help non-resident Indians in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to return to their motherland.

Praveen Kumar Shetty, president, and Prabhaker Ambalatare, chief secretary of the forum in a letter dated April 13 stated that nearly one lac non-resident Kannadigas in the UAE are facing several problems due coronavirus pandemic. They stated that Kannadigas are suffering due to health problems and unemployment and facing hardships to live. “The situation will be all problematic without medical help if the situation continues. Therefore, we request you to arrange flights to help us return home,” they stated in the letter.

“Karnataka NRI forum and non-resident entrepreneur donors assure our complete cooperation to provide facilities of 14 days quarantine for non-resident Kannadigas returning from UAE,” they stated.

    Very good gesture Shetre!! We should elaborate a plan for Indian Government on below logistics topics.
    1) Cost effective COVID-19 Screening, Testing centers and certification from Indian Embassy across Gulf countries for those people who wish to return
    2) A dedicated 300000 beds quarantine facility in India Army camp at Jaisalmer. Clearly separating A, B and C category cases.
    3) How do we get flights operate from various Gulf airports directly to Jaisalmer for a nominal fare?

    Todays Prime Minister address to the nation with seven guidelines has not even touched the millions of working abroad that brings billions to India.

    I glad to hear Mr.Praveen Shetty after Kerala government has made similar appeal through High court orders. The Indian diaspora abroad is already working without pay and some with half pay. The MOU signed by the government is suspended and there is no immediate future for the migrant workers.

    If millions of workers go back it may also impact the Forex reserve of the nation with the GDP expected to slump to 1%.

    With no job assurance back home with already millions educated jobless it will be catastrophe. Unlike state employees who have retirement benefits, these NRI have no returns unless they made little savings which may dry up fast.

    The NRI diaspora is only remembered during elections for fund raising. Forgotten like migrant laborers in their difficult times.

    let them be there until the situation in both countries come back to normalcy.. Everyone were against allowing people from Kasaragod to come to Mangalore for medical treatment fearing they would spread the virus! UAE is also a hub for the virus, so people now coming back to Mangalore would be a risk and more chances of increase in number... Shouldn't let them here until both the countries back to normalcy

    look ,we came here for work,billions of rupees remittances transfering from UAE,i think you are from kasaragod jealousy,we are kannadigas, now our duty is to go from here because UAE helped lot ,now our country's responsibilty allow us to come and keep in quarantine,i dont know what inside your mind

    When there is any function with in community , Election , any event, people first call the NRIs to collect funds. When people have lost jobs in Gulf ,Other countries and are in hardship due to the current crisis India is not ready to take back the Citizens who are working abroad. The people who have already taken their flights back to India are being harassed by the locals and officials even after completing their quarantine period. So many countries are making their best efforts to receive their citizens from other countries. There are so many Indians who want to go back due to various reasons irrespective of their designation. I hope India opens its sky's for flights to land from other countries for its citizens. Jai hind. Jai Karnataka, Jai Tulu Nadu.

    Absolutely. Now they come back to India, and create employment problem here. And when ever they feels the economic conditions improves at gulf again they migrate there. And they want government to arrange flight free of cost. This is not fair. People in India are working hard, they vote, pay tax, look after their aged parents. Please don't disturb them .

    your claim is baseless.. Though they are in gulf in bad situation now, but when they earned and sent to india was enjoyed by their families living in india right. they sacrifice here so their families can have 3 meals on their plates, can have better education. no one dare to stop an indian coming to india.
    ofcourse yes when situation improves people will travel again.

    do you know how much your economy has improved from the foreign currency coming in ?
    by the way we every NRI majority pay international student fee for our kids for eng/medical. in private intuitions they charge 10 times of the local student... teaching and eating is same as local student correct ? then where that revenue is gone.... there was good time , and now its circumstances... no one wants free of cost flights.. its just a plea to go home ..

    support them instead discriminating.

    Neither you nor anybody has right to question / block the Indian citizen to come back to India.
    They have constitutional rights. Understand...…!!!!

    Secondly, NRI is not paying Income Tax on salary in India, But his kith & kin/dependents paying GST.
    and their source of expenditure is NRI 's hard earned money in hot/humid deserts.

    Third, Many companies GCC laying-off and ready to give ONE WAY TICKET to India. So don't think people enjoying free of cost travel.

    Fourth, Million student passing and coming out from Indian Universities. There is NO ENOUGH Jobs in PVT Sector. Even GOVT job also day dreaming due to Reservation and lackadaisical attitude of Minister's / GOVT Baabus to fill vacancy's and Naturally fill their hungry stomach people has to migrate ( legally or illegally ) to GCC, EUROPE, US, AUS / NZ and same way many Bangladesh's illegally entering India.

    NRIs are depositing foreign exchange in their own account. Not in Govt's account. What kind of excuse is this.
    Has government told NRIs to study in Indian colleges by paying fees 10 times more. They can study at Gulf colleges. Already here children don't get admission in the preferred colleges.
    Suppose Covid has effected India ant not Gulf countries. Will you still wish to come back to India. No. Right. What kind of love and affection you people have for a country where you got everything free.

    My assessment things will start opening in phases 1st of May inwards...even if you evacuate these folks, they will have to be quarantined for 14 days....by that time business / work may start opening in Dubai ....

    Same people who are asking you to repatriate now will start cursing and blaming you for repatriating them...

    Those who hold a steady job and who can sustain for a month more, better stay there...dependents , students and those who don't have a steady job, better Modiji evacuate them...

    I have seen this playing live during Iraqi invasion of Kuwait...those who took risk and stayed were winners....time will judge...

    I was one of those during the invasion. Of course what you said is partly true, whereas also who returned and went back later and new arrived persons to did very well. Have you evaluated the troubles those who stayed back had over come?

    Edwin, you are correct. I can not say , those Indians stayed back during Kuwait
    Invasion were lucky. They had their fare share and more of grief. Suspected and treated like traitors. Were the very last ones to be granted residence permits .
    Indians returned to India were treated like HIV carriers including children.
    30 years have passed. Memories coming back to relive. Another generation is beginning nearly the same experience.
