Sullia, Mar 29: A priest of Kukke Adi Subramanya Temple was allegedly assaulted by a policeman on the evening of Saturday March 28. The incident came to light on Sunday March 29.
The temple priest, Srinivas, was on his way to the temple to offer evening puja when the incident took place, it is learnt.
As per the accusation made by Vipra Parivar organization, Srinivas was walking towards the temple when he was allegedly stopped by Shankar, a constable belonging to Subramanya police station, and questioned as to where he was going amid the lockdown. The priest told him that he was going to offer puja, but the constable refused to listen and allegedly beat him up with his lathi.
Vipra Parivar organization has urged the SP and DC of Dakshina Kannada to take action on the police constable.
The constable is well known to the priest as per the Vipra organization. The organization has condemned the act and urged the district SP and DC to suspend the constable immediately.
The district is under lockdown owing to coronavirus that has spread across the state. Section 144 has been imposed and citizens have been asked to stay home. Shops and business establishments are closed, except for pharmacies and other essential services.
