Kadaba, Mar 29: The unavailability of alcohol owing to the total lockdown in the district has driven two addicts to commit suicide, in separate incidents.
In the first incident, Tomy Thomas (50), a native of Cheriyamakkal of Elikulam in Kottyam district of Kerala, who was residing in a rented house at Nanduguri of Kutrupadi village, had joined as a rubber tapping labourer in the estate belonging to Sathish M A just 25 days ago. As he did not report to work for some days, Satish went to check on Tomy, but found the door locked. On looking in through the window, he saw that Tomy had hanged himself using his lungi.
The locals have said that Tomy was roaming in the vicinity asking for liquor. It is suspected that out of desperation of not getting liquor Tomy must have killed himself. The body has been kept in the mortuary of a hospital in Deralakatte, as his relatives have to come from Kerala, and right now transport has been suspended. Kadaba police have registered a case in this regard.
In another incident that took place near the railway track at Nakur in Kodimbala village, Thomas (70), a resident of Ganadakere of Kodmbala village hanged himself to the branch of a tree. He had left his family and went to Kerala 35 years ago. Though he returned some years back, he was not staying at home but sleeping on the pavements in Kadaba town. He was addicted to liquor and had other health complications too, sources said.
On Friday March 27, Thomas had taken some money from his son, and on Saturday March 28, he allegedly committed suicide. Kadaba police have registered a case based on the complaint given by Saneesh, son of the deceased.
