Mangaluru: Helped by digital technology, police plan to tame traffic violators

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Mar 6: Even though the police department has been making all out efforts to enforce traffic rules and educate traffic violators, many are habituated to breaking rules with impunity. Rajesh K V, newly posted to Bantwal was traffic sub-inspector, has planned to seek recourse to digital technology to see that the violators do not go Scot free.

Whenever traffic police wait by the roadside to punish the violators, the vehicle riders often hoodwink the police by taking deviations. Forcible action sometimes might give rise to friction. Therefore, Rajesh plans to make use of the CCTV footage from cameras installed in various places and serve notices on the basis of these footages and make the violators cough up fines. The footage effectively helps the police personnel to track triple rides, riding without helmets, over speeding, driving on one-way against the flow etc.

During the first ten days since Rajesh took over as station house officer of traffic, about 40 notices have been served. Traffic police visit the homes of those who show scant respect for the rules, and deliver notices directly to them personally. Rajesh feels that this system will avoid friction with staff during registering of cases. He plans to intensify the operation based on CCTV footage.

He also wants to give video cameras to traffic staff to keep an eye on rule violators. He has requested the people to cooperate with traffic police and to follow traffic rules strictly.

He feels that there is a need to sort out traffic problems in Bantwal taluk and road rules should be followed properly. His intention eventually is to see that the numbers of traffic violation cases are brought down drastically.

Hightech digital technology should be used against city buses , trucks and lorries who drive carelessly in and around Mangalore. Why only target 2 wheelers?

Good beginning. I want to see when vehicles going on wrong side of road or in opposite side of one way being pulled up. I also want to see Autorickshaws being pulled up for using rickshaw stand as an excuse to park vehicles in half a kilometer long Q. There should be a limit of maximum 4-6 rickshaws in one Q other than at Railway Station.

Just place 2 CCTV camera in all major lanes all over mangalore & mangalorecity, and put traffic police to fine on that basis daily , 24hrs fine system, (max fine u ll get in the evening) you ll find lot and lots of violators... that money use it to repair road and regulatory warning boards. Nothing is impossible if traffic police dept work well.

Driving on one way is very common especially in nanthoor. It is more dangerous as it is national highway . Either the authorities should catch hold of the people violating one way rule or reduce the distance a vehicle has to take to make a u turn

    Hi.
The fines are collected from thesebus drivers however not all are caught under violation. And apart from these fines collected they still continue their reckless driving all over again may be with same bus operator or other transport agencies.

The ghatta gowda traffic cops in mangalore are only behind two wheelers. they do not touch the four wheelers, especially if they are high end cars.

They also have learnt that two-wheeler riders are an easy prey. They ask us to wear helmets. Will it guarnatee life in case of accident due to bad roads?

They are not bothered about the lack of footpath for pedestrians and also the rash way of city buses. Because they get mamool from the city bus owners as well as they cannot question the MCC administration for footpath as it is more corrupted than these guys.

There is no answer to such questions. They only follow rules that are framed by the brainless ruling governments

and the worthless public of this city does not raise voice on these things and just run behind cows and communal issues.

The use of helmets in preventing death is controversial according to several studies.

Actually it was found that there were more deaths due to helmets as it restricted the field of vision.

Try seeing to extreme left or right with and without a helmet and you will understand the meaning.

Many states in US have made helmets optional and helmets have been banned in Commonwealth Boxing.

Those who make the rules may not be riding 2 wheelers.

In India it should be made optional as the head is of the rider and nobody else is harmed unlike driving on the wrong side of the road etc.

I drive a 4x4 jeep cherokee and i have been stopped 2 times for having a sun blinds on my rear windows.

Also it's natural that they target 2 wheelers because they tend to drive without helmets, triple ride and what not. Please drive towards deralakatte, thokkotu someday and see how many 2 wheeler rides wear helmets and ride triple.

Also its common sense that lack of foot path doesn't come under the purview of police

Whenever we write about something it is mostly referred to the higher percentage of things.

There may be exceptions like your case. With regard to footpath I have already written in my comment that MCC is more corrupt than traffic police and the occupation of flower seller opposite big bazaar in lalbagh is evidence for this.

What I was stressing is that the departments do not work in coordination. All follow their rules and general public is heckled.

    Hope you understood Cherokeewala

Cherokee wala must be bald and looks like DON to cop.
White car doesn't mean you cannot be stopped.
You should car pool and avoid going alone in such a big car. This wil help in reducing traffic and this advice is to every one in mangalore no matter how hefty money you make by the end of the month.
