Dubai, Oct 8: When it comes to supporting Tulu art, culture and theatre, the members of the Tulu-speaking community in the UAE have never lagged behind. They have been whole-heartedly encouraging a variety of shows being staged in this part of the Gulf. Thus, Tulu theatre activities have seen a new trend with the staging of comedies in UAE in recent years.
Professional Tulu theatre groups from the hometowns have created a storm in the UAE in the past years and this has resulted in people asking for more of such entertainment fare. With a view to cater to this demand, talented local artistes under the banner of Sangama Kalaavidaru UAE will present a Tulu comedy play ‘Maastru Manipujer’ (The teacher has been keeping mum") in Dubai on October 30, 2009.
The play is being presented as a mark of respect and tribute to the late Umesh Nanthoor, a tireless Tulu and Kannada theatre activist and organizer in the UAE, who passed away five years ago while on a visit home on holidays to Mangalore.
Young director Vishwanath Shetty, who successfully staged the Tulu comedy Ganguna Gammatt twice in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has been inspired to stage his second venture in Tulu - ‘Maastru Manipujer’ written by Dinesh Kankanady.
Quite different from the earlier play, ‘Maastru Manipujer’ lays stress not only on comedy, but also on social issues.
The show will be held at the Elite English Speaking School Auditorium, opposite Century Mall, Mamzar Road, Dubai on Friday, October 30 at 4.00 pm.
