Gadag, Apr 22: In a tragic incident reported from Gadag district, a 29-year-old national-level Kabaddi player and physical education teacher ended her life after alleged harassment and blackmail by her former lover. The deceased, identified as Saira Banu Nadaf, was a resident of Asundi village near Gadag city.
The incident came to light on Monday and has sparked shock and outrage across the region. Saira Banu, who had brought laurels to Karnataka in Kabaddi, was set to be married on May 8. However, she took the extreme step at her residence while her family had stepped out for wedding shopping.

According to sources, Saira had penned a detailed death note in which she held her ex-lover, Mailari, responsible for her death. She revealed that although the relationship had ended five years ago, they reconnected a month back through Instagram. Saira mentioned that Mailari had celebrated her birthday and made promises to care for her. However, she later faced continuous harassment and blackmail, with threats of leaking personal photos and videos.
In her note, she wrote, "The mistake I made that led to my death is that I loved a boy named Mailari... he is harassing me using my photos and videos. That is why I have decided to end my life. My only request is that my father and mother should not be troubled in any way. Please forgive me.”
Saira Banu was known not only for her sporting achievements but also for her dedication as a teacher. Her sudden demise has left her family, students, and the local community in deep mourning.
Women's rights organisations have condemned the incident and demanded strict action against the accused, highlighting the urgent need to address the recurring issue of women being blackmailed in the name of love.
Meanwhile, the Gadag Rural Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt for the accused, who is absconding. Saira Banu’s grieving family has demanded the death penalty for the accused. The investigation is ongoing.
