Udupi, Sep 27: Sand issue, which was bothering the construction industry of the coast since two years, finally got resolved and the extraction started from Friday, September 27. The price of sand, which had reached astronomical proportions, will be available at nominal rates for commoners from now on. The construction and sand extraction labourers are elated due to the solution for a long standing problem.
"As the sand issue was there since a long time, now the sand will not be given by App on experimental basis. However, work order is given to extract silt from the Baje dam. When the sand of Baje dam gets extracted, it will be distributed via App," said deputy commissioner Dr Jagadeesha.
Dr Jagadeesha further said, "When the sand dunes were identified last time, some dunes, where fishing is done were identified also. About these locations, we will discuss with the local fishermen. If the sand in the water body is making them difficult to navigate their boat, then we will give permission to extract sand from such dunes also. More sand dunes will be identified."
"Tender was called to extract sand in 24 spots in non-CRZ area. However, only two have shown interest to take up the work. The work order is given to them. Once again tender will be called after simplifying the rules of the tender. Tender is not called for the remaining 22 blocks. A proposal is sent to simplify the tender rules," added Dr Jagadeesha.
"Work order is given to remove the silt at Baje dam. This will be done on experimental basis. The permit, which is generally given for one year, is given for three months only. If the same is required again they have to join the sand App." he concluded.
