Mangaluru: Abandoned 108 ambulance equipment stolen by thieves; DHO orders probe

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Nov 15: Equipment from abandoned 108 ambulances is being stolen by thieves, prompting concern and an official directive for investigation.

Several 108 ambulances have been abandoned on a hilly area behind the TB Hospital in Vamanjoor, on the outskirts of Mangaluru. Thieves have been taking advantage of the situation, stealing items such as batteries and oxygen cylinders from the vehicles. Evidence of theft tools like saw blades, rod cutters, and scissors have been found at the site. The abandoned ambulances also contain stretchers, medical kits, registration books, vehicle documents, and RC copies, posing a risk of misuse.

Social activist Ibrahim highlighted that these ambulances, discarded without any precautionary measures, are now vulnerable to theft. Despite no official order for reusing the equipment, the items have been left unattended, making them easy targets for thieves.

When contacted, Dakshina Kannada district health officer (DHO) H R Thimmayya stated that the old 108 ambulance vehicles have reached the end of their operational lifespan. The district now has 28 new emergency 108 ambulances in service for 2023-24, while 16 older vehicles have been designated for disposal. The DHO assured that once a government order is issued, the disposal process will begin. He also directed officials to look into the situation at Vamanjoor and take necessary action.

What a criminal waste of Tax Payers' money by the Government.!!! People work hard for a decent living and pay taxes to the Govt for the betterment of the citizens and the society at large. In the first place, why were these ambulances abandoned by the Govt? If they should have to do it, Govt should have taken, appropriate steps to either refurbish these vehicles or sell them & use that money for next batch fresh purchase. At least the concerned officials should have taken appropriate steps to auction these old vehicles or do something sensible. Serious actions should be taken against these erring officials for this kind of criminal l waste of public money. Hope this will be taken seriously and dealt with stringent action against the concerned officials.

Hard earned people's money has been wasted already by abandoning those ambulances and now when some intelligent smart people making their living out of it you(officials) have a problem of it. Don't understand the logic. If you have really cared about it you have maintained it or repaired it on time. If it was not repairable you would have done FWT. You have done nothing. If you ask me those officials have to be punished for negligence.
