Udupi: Provide opportunities, not just compassion to special needs children – Fr Denis D'Sa

Media Release

Udupi, Nov 14: In a heartening message, Fr Denis D'Sa, the priest of St Annamma Church, Thottam, emphasized that children with special needs are never a burden but rather a responsibility for society to nurture and support. With the right encouragement, these children can become invaluable assets to the community, he remarked. Fr D'Sa was speaking at the All-Religion Deepavali and Children's Day celebration organized by the Samanya Sarvadharma Samiti at Spandana Special School in Nejaru on Thursday.

"Just as a lamp needs oil to shine, children with special needs require opportunities, not just compassion, to realize their potential and contribute to society," he said. He underscored that raising and educating these children is not an easy task, but by providing them with the necessary opportunities and understanding, they too can achieve and excel, just like others.

Ramesh Tingalaya, president of the Samanya Sarvadharma Samiti, expressed that the event was meaningful, far beyond a mere outward celebration. He praised the work of Umesh and his team at Spandana, recognizing their dedication to the children.

As part of the occasion, the committee presented Spandana with grocery items worth Rs 10,000 and an additional Rs 10,000 in cash. Sister Sushma led recreational games for the children, adding joy to the celebration.

The event was attended by Agnel Fernandes, vice-president of the Samiti; Shabbir; Sunil Fernandes, vice-president of the governing board; secretary Blessilla Crasta; superior Sister Sushma of Thottam Convent; Sister Priya; Sister Marina; Vanita Fernandes, and others. Leslie Laveena Aroza led the prayers, Spandana managing trustee Umesh gave the welcome address, and Leslie Aroza extended the vote of thanks.
