Kundapur, Jul 12: These days there are wide range of problems in our country that need immediate attention. Among them, overloading of garbage bins and wastage of power by not using streetlights efficiently are the most prominent ones. To provide solutions to the above problems, the final year computer science and engineering students of Moodlakatte Institute of Technology, Kundapur, Ramachandra M, Sachitha Shetty, Shilpa V Shetty and Shwetha V Shetty with the support of Melwin D’Souza, Head of CSE department and under the guidance of Dhruva P Achar, assistant professor, CSE department came up with a project named STAP using IoT technologies.
Since internet is available to most part of the world, IoT based garbage system will provide information about the level of the garbage container to the municipal authorities. By doing so, the system ensures that the city is kept clean at all times.
The system makes use of PIR and LDR which turns the streetlight ON only when it is dark outside and provided someone moves in that area otherwise depending on the darkness level the system would either keep the brightness of the streetlight at 20% or at OFF state. These two functionalities which deal with garbage and power consumption, can reduce the workload of municipal and electricity board members whose responsibility is to continuously monitor the garbage bins and streetlight coming under their jurisdiction and also save a lot of power.
In addition to this, accidents in steep curves and hairpin bends are serious issues. With reference to this, a smart accident detector which acts like a streetlight can be used. The basic idea is to plant this streetlight at the point of the hairpin bend and if there is a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction the accident detector will serve as an indicator for that vehicle. In this way, both the vehicles will be alerted and possible collision will be avoided. With the help of this system, the country's major problems of garbage, power, accidents can be reduced drastically.
