Bhubaneswar, Apr 19: Bhubaneswar is all set to witness a high-octane football fest as the fifth edition of the Kalinga Super Cup kicks off on Sunday, April 20, at the iconic Kalinga Stadium. This year, 15 teams will battle it out for glory and a coveted spot in the AFC Champions League Two.
Unlike the last two editions, the 2025 tournament will follow a straight knockout format, echoing the 2018 and 2019 editions. With no group stages, every match will be a do-or-die clash.
Bhubaneswar has long been synonymous with the tournament, having hosted three of the previous four editions. Odisha FC brought the trophy back home after their 2023 win in Kozhikode, further strengthening the city’s emotional connection with the Super Cup.
Title Holders and Early Clashes
Reigning champions East Bengal FC return to defend their crown, starting with a Round of 16 clash against Kerala Blasters FC. Both sides had underwhelming ISL campaigns and will be keen to redeem themselves with silverware. The winner will face Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who received a direct entry into the quarterfinals following Churchill Brothers' withdrawal.
Former Champions Eye a Comeback
2019 winners FC Goa take on Gokulam Kerala FC in a key match-up on Monday. With both sides having tasted continental competition in the past, this match could define their route back to the international stage.
Later that day, hosts Odisha FC will square off against Punjab FC. Odisha have quickly become Super Cup specialists, winning in 2023 and finishing as runners-up in 2024. Meanwhile, Punjab FC are still chasing their first knockout stage appearance.
Rivalries and Redemption
On Wednesday, Bengaluru FC will clash with Inter Kashi. With a recent 3-0 Durand Cup win and a 1-1 Super Cup draw between them, fireworks are expected. Bengaluru, the 2018 champions, are aiming to end their four-year wait for an Asian return.
Later that evening, Mumbai City FC face Chennaiyin FC in the most-played fixture in Super Cup history. Mumbai hold the edge with a 13-match unbeaten run, but Chennaiyin will look to break the jinx and revive their cup form.
Closing Round of 16 Fixtures
Thursday will see NorthEast United FC take on Mohammedan Sporting. Fresh from their historic Durand Cup win, the Highlanders will aim to end the season with another trophy. Mohammedan, on the other hand, are looking to bounce back after a disappointing ISL debut.
The final Round of 16 clash will feature Jamshedpur FC against Hyderabad FC. Jamshedpur have reached the semifinals in the last two editions and are eyeing the title this time. Hyderabad, still struggling to make an impact in the tournament, hope to turn the tide.
