Udupi, Jun 22: Muniyal Institute of Ayurveda Medical Sciences, Manipal grandly celebrated their fifth International Yoga Day on June 21.
In association with AYUSH department, a yoga session was held at indoor stadium Ajjarkad. Jyothsna, yoga lecturer from MIAMS, Manipal participated as resource person. Students of the institute demonstrated various yogic postures as per protocol.
Subsequently, the different yoga competitions held on the occasion of yoga day for the high school level students was inaugurated at MIAMS by chairman of the institution, Dr M V Shetty, Dr Madan Nayak (Meditation Centre, Mudipu, Mangaluru), vice principal Dr Gururaj Tantry by lighting the lamp. A guest lecture on importance of yoga in the present health scenario was delivered by Dr Shrinidhi Dhaya, dept of Swasthvritta, SDM College of Ayurveda, Kuttpaddi Udupi.
Prizes were distributed to students who had won in the yogasana competition. Madhu Upadhyaya from Madhava Kripa English Medium School bagged the first prize, Sudharma, from Rajivnagar Govt High School bagged the second prize, Ayush from SMS English Medium School, Brahmavar bagged the third prize in the solo competition. For the group yoga dance Madhava Kripa School won the first place, Rajivnagar Govt High School won the second place, St Mary English Medium School, Kannarpady won the third place.
Kedar Nayak, Prajna from Valakadu High School, Shrinidhi Roy from SMS English Brahmavar won the first, second and third place for the elocution on the topic 'Importance of yoga in human life'. For the poster competition, Lavanya from Milagres Kalyanpura, Poorvi from Madhava Kripa English Medium School, Adarsh Bhat K from EMHS Kunjibettu bagged first, second and third prizes.
Among the 18 schools who participated, Madhava Kripa English Medium School Manipal won the overall championship award.
Various programmes demonstrating yoga postures and virtues of yoga were performed excellently by the students of the institute. Dr Archana K welcomed and convened the programme. Dr Veeraj Hegde, associate professor of Swasthavritta and Yoga delivered the vote of thanks. Trustee Hemalatha V Shetty, yoga lecturer Jyothsna, administrative officer Yogeesh Shetty also graced the occasion.
