Karkala, Jun 7: Digging of borewells during summer when scarcity of water is acute is normal. The wells are dug hoodwinking officials though there are laws to prevent them. Water is not found in many of the bore wells but the owners do not try to close them. We hear in the media small children falling and becoming victims in such wells in the absence of suitable machinery to rescue them.
Students of mechanical engineering division of Nitte Engineering College who realized it have invented a device to help in rescue operation through robot technology. The device is invented using robot technology by final year BE students Rupel Velen Ganews, Roydon Mathais, Rishon Noel Saldanha and Rayan Althaj Kazi under guidance from mechanical engineering division assistant professor Krishnaprasad. DC and servo motors are used in the invention. The place where the child is stuck in the bore well and its condition can be monitored through long range CC camera.
“The machine has steel rods similar to legs to help rescue the child,” explained the students who invented the unit. It is a manually controlled computerised safety system.
