Mangaluru, Jun 7: St Aloysius BEd College, recently celebrated World Environment day. The theme was ‘better environment for better tomorrow’.
The chief guest who presided over the event was Dr K V Rao, director, Regional Science Centre, Pilikula Nisarga Dhama (former professor of St Aloysius College).
In his speech he said, "Every year World Environment day is celebrated on June 5 to spread awareness, to encourage people to take action and to protect the environment. For a healthy living, environment plays an important role. It provides us air, food, and other resources.
"Researchers say pollution is increasing everyday and degrading the environment causing poor health. The deterioration has caused the depletion of resources like fossil fuels, air, soil, water and ecosystem. It is a global task to control the environment from being polluted." Further, he told that earth has right to live without pollution. He also urged that individuals need to come together to fight pollution.
On this occasion, principal of the college, Dr Farita Viegas said, celebrating environment day in educational institutions is like a campaign to bring positive change in the students’ attitude.
Environmental issues are big and everyone must be aware and give their efforts to solve them.
Youngsters and students are a hope to bring positive change in the environment and conserve it for the future. This day invites us to become active agents of an eco-friendly development and ensure the safety of our planet.
The talks and speeches followed with a cultural activity by the students. There was also a dance-drama highlighting the significance of planting trees and conserving greenery. Sr Preethin UFS and her team performed on a group song.
For the event, the welcome address was delivered by Sr Savitha B S. Sushmitha D’Souza highlighted the significance of celebrating World Environment Day. The event came to a close with the vote of thanks by Kimberly Monteiro.
The compering for the event was done by Sr Judith UFS and Anju. Organization of the event was by Santhosh Furtado, staff coordinator for the programme.
