Mangaluru, Jan 4: All India Konkani Parishad, in its meeting held recently in Goa, has chosen Mangaluru’s noted Konkani poet, winner of Sahitya Akademi award, Melvyn Rodrigues, to preside over 24th All India Konkani Literary Conference. The conference will be held in the Goan city of Canacona on February 1 and 2.
Born in 1962, Rodrigues through his Kavita Trust has been a source of inspiration to many budding poets. After his graduation in management, he did his post-graduation in sociology.
He has translated Yashwanta Chittala's Kannada short stories ‘Katheyadalu Hudugi’ and K S Narasimhaswamy's collection of poems ‘Tereda Bagilu’ into Konkani. Besides he has published six of his own poetry collections, two books of essays, one novella and edited six anthologies of poems.
Melvyn has been editing and maintaining a website 'kavitaa.com' dedicated only to Konkani poetry since 2004. He has lived outside India for 14 years and currently is the Director, Operations, Daijiworld Media. He is instrumental in founding many premier Konkani organisations.
He has won prestigious Sahitya Akademi and Dr T M A Pai Foundation award for his book of poems 'Prakriticho Paas'. Besides he has won Smt Vimala V Pai Vishwa Konkani award (Devi Ninkasi - poetry collection), Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy honourary award, Konkani Kutam Bahrain award, Daiji Dubai award and Bimb Sahitya award from Goa.
