Bengaluru, Jan 18: The Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, which generates over 20 tonnes of waste each day, has initiated the process of setting up a state-of-the-art solid waste management facility on its premises to achieve its sustainability goals.

Ekolog Ltd., a Polish company with over 30 years of experience in the environmental technologies sector, has been selected as the implementation partner on this Design-Build-Own-Operate (DBOO) project.

Phase 1 of the facility will have the capability to process 20 TPD (tons/day) and will be scalable to 60 TPD.

This facility is scheduled to become operational from January 2019.

Once commissioned, at 25 TPD, organic waste will be converted into sustainable bio-energy, through a process of biomethanation, generating enough electricity to power about 5,000 households each year.

In addition, the facility will generate about 1.5 million Kgs of Class A organic compost per year. Recyclable waste will be segregated and sent to recyclers for useable product conversion.

Speaking on the occasion, Karnataka’s Chief Secretary Ratna Prabha, who is also the Chairperson of KGIAL, said, “This is a big leap towards sustainability, leading to scientific and systematic waste management, including reduced landfill and increased resource recovery.

“KGIAL’s focus is to turn all the waste generated by KIAB community into useable resources, thus ensuring that we minimise our carbon footprint. The project is in line with the various environment-friendly programmes initiated by the Government of Karnataka,’’ she said.

KGIAL Managing Director and CEO Hari Marar said, the Airport takes its role as a leader in sustainable development very seriously. Solid Waste Management is just one of our initiatives in this area.

The Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru will be the first in Asia to adopt an in-house, sustainable and integrated waste management facility, he said adding: “Our aim is to ensure that our Airport environment works towards the highest adherence of sustainability.”

Robert Jans, Director, Ekolog, said, “The Ekolog team is looking forward to the creation and implementation of this solid waste management project at the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. The new waste processing plant will be the first of its kind in Asia and will give Ekolog the opportunity to showcase its technology and expertise in this area.”

The solid waste management facility will be odourless, protected from animal access while at the same time ensuring high standards of hygiene.

I appreciate the good work done by the Mangalore International Airport Authority. In the meanwhile I would like to explain an experience I had yesterday when I went to pick a friend from airport. I had reached the gate at 6.05 pm. My friend was ready with the baggage and it took just 2 minutes to pick and maximum 3 minutes to reach the exit gate, for my surprise I saw the timing on the ticket given to me was 6.00. This is the second time happened to me and when discussed with my friends everyone told they also faced the same issue.

I request the concerned authority to check this issue.

There is called something OTP and one minute delay in flight the aircraft has to pay fine in lakhs.
There is some rules and regulation...stop complaining and always try to be 3hours prior for intl flight and 2hours prior for domestic flight...TO THE AIRPORT...Grow up n once again stop complaing...You be right first.

What Ranjith was trying to say is that he had wrong time printed on his ticket for his vehicle at the entry gate and he had to pay from his pocket within the time allotted for free pickup even though he was prompt to pick his friend in time. He is also saying that this has happened to him before & with some of his friends. Even I have a feeling that MIA is trying to make money by way of taxi's, parking, shortening pickup time etc., instead of the airlines which is not a good thing for future growth of the airport & the region.

Congratulations! Great news! Hope some will shed some light to improve Bajpe Airport too! According to me Mangalore Airport is bit lethargic! Vehicular movement at arrival / departure is chaotic! Parking are landscaping gone to dogs, similar to DC office landscaping at Manipal!!!!
