Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sep 20: The Jet Airways flight from Mangaluru to Dubai, which was scheduled to take off at 11.20 pm on Tuesday September 20 was cancelled.

The flight had to be called off as the aircraft which was to arrive in Mangaluru from Mumbai and then fly to Dubai could not arrive due to unavoidable circumstances.

It is learnt that a Spice Jet flight overshot the runway at Mumbai airport and got stuck in the mud, following which the main runway had to be closed. The alternate runway is not in use. Due to heavy rains and low visibility, operations were halted at the Mumbai airport. All passengers on board the Spice Jet aircraft are reported to be safe.

As a result, the Jet Airways flight which was scheduled to arrive in Mangaluru was cancelled, and the flight to Dubai was affected.

Jet Airways has so far not announced new departure time to Dubai.

About 150 pasengers were to board the flight to Dubai.

Two strange points about Mumbai airport. (1) Supposed to be the 2nd busiest airport in India after New Delhi. Yet, they operate only one main runway (the 2nd runway is a cross runway and is also shorter). (2) They keep spending money on upgrading CSIA and at the same time talk about building a new airport at Navi Mumbai.

If they can acquire some land on the east side and south side of the current main runway, they can build a parallel runway to the current main runway (east-west) which will allow one runway for take off and one for landing only in which case they can close the current useless cross runway. All the cargo, VIP, military and maintenance facilities should be shifted to Navi Mumbai airport which will allow more space on the current airport for domestic and international flights, more aircraft parking space plus two parallel runways, one 10,000 feet and another one possibly 12,000 feet.
