Mangaluru, Nov 16: “The holistic development of humanity is possible only when we use our talents for the upliftment of society. This is one of the primary objectives of education,” said surgeon vice admiral Dr Arti Sarin AVSM, VSM, director general, Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) during the 14th convocation ceremony of Nitte (Deemed to be University) held on Saturday at KSHEMA (K S Hegde Medical Academy) Grounds.
Delivering the convocation address, Dr Sarin emphasized that the country's development rests in the hands of educated youth. She urged graduates to use their qualifications to contribute to nation-building. Alongside, they should make earnest efforts to preserve and promote the country’s traditional arts and culture, enabling them to fulfill their civic duties effectively, she said.
Dr Sarin remarked, “The progress of humanity depends on preserving and practicing our values. Learning is not confined to the period of acquiring degrees; it is a continuous process.” She encouraged graduates to expand their knowledge and dedicate themselves to the dual mission of self-growth and societal development.
“Life presents us with many challenges, and success and failure are part of the journey. Belief in one’s inner strength is essential to overcome these challenges and aim for higher growth. Utilize the opportunities you receive for both personal and societal advancement,” she said. Dr Sarin also lauded Nitte University for providing an excellent educational environment for young learners, calling it exemplary in all aspects.
Welcome Address and University Achievements
Prof Dr M S Moodithaya, vice-chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University), in his welcome address, highlighted the university’s accomplishments. He stated that Nitte DU is ranked among the top universities in India. It has been accredited with an 'A+' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and is ranked 66th among over 1,100 universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences is ranked 6th in the country, while the Nitte Gulabi Shetty Memorial Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences holds the 41st position. The university has also achieved recognition on several national and international platforms.
A total of 1052 graduates received their degrees during this convocation. The details are as follows: Doctor of Philosophy - 34, Medical - 163 (PG-15+UG-148), Dental - 147 (Fellowship-1+PG-49+UG-97), Pharmacy - 209 (PG-107+UG-102), Nursing - 143 (PG-05+UG-138), Physiotherapy - 85 (PG-30+UG-55), Allied Health Sciences – 146 (PG-42+100+PGD-04), Humanities - 14 (PG-06+ UG-03+PGD-05), Biological Sciences - 49 (PG-45+UG-04), Architecture - 41 (UG), Speech and Hearing - 15 (PG) and Business Administration - 06 (PG-06).
In recognition of academic excellence, the university will also award 22 gold medals (Eleven Nitte University gold medals and eleven Endowment gold medals) and 72 merit certificates to outstanding students.
The ceremony was presided over by the chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University), N Vinaya Hegde. Other dignitaries present included pro-chancellor (hospital management) Prof Dr M Shantharam Shetty, pro-chancellor (administration) Vishal Hegde, registrar Prof Dr Harsha Halahalli, controller of examinations Prof Dr Prasad B Shetty, the heads of the constituent colleges and members of the executive council and academic council were also present.
