Mangaluru, Jun 5: City deputy commissioner of police (DCP), K M Shantaraju, advised people to click photos of two-wheelers who violate traffic rules by either not wearing helmets or carrying three persons in a single vehicle, and send the same to Kudla WhatsApp Group bearing No. 9480802312.
He was reacting to complaints made by the people in the phone-in programme conducted from the office of the city police commissioner on Sunday. "We have been taking action against those who do not wear helmets, but violations continue to happen. Therefore, we request people to cooperative with us by taking photographs of people riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets or carrying people beyond capacity and send the same to the above number so that action can be taken against the concerned," he explained.
People who took part in the programme came up with various complaints. Some said that auto rickshaw drivers at city junction railway station have been collecting exorbitant hire charges, vehicles are driven recklessly from opposite directions in one-way roads, vehicles are parked on the road near a garage on Nanthoor-Pumpwell road and other shops elsewhere, vehicles carrying construction debris are driven without properly covering the materials etc. Some wanted branches of trees touching power cables to be cut down. A demand to erect barricade opposite Samruddhi Hall near Kankanady Garody to restrain vehicles from over-speeding was made. Some others wanted proper footpaths to be provided by the side of all the roads in the city, and pointed out that youngsters are commonly seen occupying seats meant for senior citizens in buses.
The DCP revealed that discussion over re-opening of prepaid counter at city junction railway station is going on and there is a possibility of the issue getting solved shortly. He said cases of violating rules and driving vehicles on the wrong way in the one-way road near Milagres cross road will be dealt with sternly. A complainant pointed out that eight educational institutions are located between Vamanjur and Mangal Jyothi within a stretch of 500 metres but because of the absence of road humps in this region, students and their parents are experiencing problems in crossing the road.
The DCP said that erection of humps is governed by certain rules and that this issue would be brought to the knowledge of the department concerned. On the demand to build protective fencing on both sides of the railway gate at Jokatte to avoid people from directly walking cross the tracks, he said he would write to railway department. There was a suggestion to demolish M V Shastri Memorial bus shelter on Kadri Road that has become redundant and create a parking lot in its place. Shantaraju said the traffic police will take stock of the situation and do the needful.
City crime branch assistant sub-inspector, Sudarshan, and head constable, Purushotham, were present.
