Mangaluru, Feb 25: The stretch of the road between Padavinangady and Bondel passing opposite Bondel church has witnessed several accidents in the past. Although the people have time and again impressed on the need to control speed of vehicles on this road that is located on a slope, and where a bus stand too is located, the police are reluctant do the same as it is considered as VIP road being a part of the airport road.

At around 8.15 am on Saturday February 25, a TVS Victor motor bike bearing No. KA19 R5707 driven by Kishore (35) from Bolpugudde here was waiting to take u-turn opposite Bondel church when a Honda Activa two-wheeler bearing registration No. KA19 ES7102 that came at high speed from the direction of Padavingangady hit the waiting motor bike hard. The bike rider was thrown to the other side of the road due to the impact of the collision. Both the occupants of the Activa tumbled on the road and rolled over several times before coming to a stop.

The rider of motor bike suffered minor injuries. Both the occupants of the Activa scooter, whose helmets also came off when they rolled on the road, suffered grave injuries. The two seriously injured men were immediately taken in a passing car to the hospital.

Further details are awaited. The accident has come as a reminder about the dangers posed by unscientific diversion located on a slope and failure of the concerned to control speed of vehicles through barricades or speed breakers on such dangerous stretch of road where bus stand, a school, and a diversion road towards Vamanjur are located.

Your report states: “ The Police are reluctant (to provide speed-breakers) as it is considered as VIP road being a part of the airport road”. You are right. When the late President Abdul Kalam visited Mangaluru some speed-breakers,, at KPT Junction, Bendure, were deleted. So, we are ready to kill and maim our people for VIPs. The fact is also those speed-breakers, and many more still remaining were not scientifically designed and are dubbed “Spine-breakers”. Fortunately, of late some speed-breakers are being constructed as per standards. It is time that all speed-breakers are reconstructed as per standards. The subject was discussed in the Karnataka legislature some years ago and grand promises were made to rectify matters, especially on State Highways.
Road safety is sacrificed at the altar of VIP arrogance and vanity. The Supreme Court had had restricted the use of red beacon lights atop VIP vehicles. This is being violated by our tin-pot ministers. I live close to the airport road and am constantly assailed by sirens of VIP carcades which have 30/50 vehicles of favour-seeking chamcha politicos. What happens to other traffic during the frequent VIP intrusions? Hundreds of policemen of all ranks line up the VIP root and non-VIP motorists are made to stop their vehicles on the apron of the road for about 15 minutes till the VIP brigade passes.
It may be understandable to stop the traffic to make way for VIPs. But when the road has four lanes and divided by a median, what sense does it make to torture the motorists driving in the opposite direction of VIP route – and separated by a two-ft median?
Recently, in such a situation, when I showed some impatience while driving in the morning in the opposite direction, the young cop asked me if I was in a hurry. When I said “Yes” with some hope, he coolly said: “Then I will take you to the station where you can wait till 7PM”! Look at the cheek of percolated arrogance.

    John B. Monteiro,

If this a true incident .... then this type of behavior is exactly what I comment about over here regularly. Here you have made a mistake. why are you blaming the cop?

We Indians are like this. We don't follow the rules and expect others to follow. If you don't follow how can you expect a VIP to follow?

Airport-bound drivers, specially from Kerala, under-estimate travel-time to reach the airport. They also want to make up time lost in traffic jams which are common on highways. With the result, they over-speed on the strait stretches of roads from KPT junction to Kavoor Junction from where the turns and twists of the road compels them to slow down.
I am not going into the spate of accidents taking place on the KPT-Kavoor stretch, including the death of a morning walker who was killed about two months ago. Against this background, I do not agree with those who decry the efficacy of speed-breakers – just because they are not properly marked by periodic painting. Therefore, I request the authorities concerned to install speed-breakers at the following points.
1 In front of Codialbail Press, before the Mary Hill junction on north-moving road. On the opposite road before the temple dwara.
2 One in front of Vikas College on the north-bound road and one on the opposite side before the bus stop.
3 One in front of Daiji office and the church where 1500 students and hundreds of church-goers, including senior citizens, cross the road.
4 Further north, opposite MGC High school/PU College , where 1500 students are involved and vehicles take turn to reach children to school.
5 In front of Kudremukh Colony on both sides of the road
6 On three in-coming roads at Kavoor junction, with one more traffic circle to take care of traffic from Kooloor.
Let us first have these traffic-restraining structures done and then follow-up with their proper maintenance.
PS: I am willing to sit with any authority that deals with this subject.

    John B. Monteiro,

While you are at it,... why don't you demand speed breakers be installed every 500 meters or still better 100 meters. This will make our roads safe. wouldn't it?

Speed breakers are not the answer. Start addressing the problem from the root. You demand the speed breakers be installed ..... but can you guarantee that the speed breakers will be maintained? can you guarantee that all the marking and warning lights will be installed?

The root problems are that the drivers are unaware of basic traffic rules and the roads are designed badly and in a haphazard manner.

Agreed with many of your comments. Other dangerous where we need speed breakers is at padil junction and kankandi railway station cross from the main road. Even last time I had put this comment in daiji. But we know not our elected ones read these comments or the portal......

This is the result of providing unwanted U-turns in the dividers of 4 lane road under the pressure of local peoples/politicians inside city or highway. Only in designated areas U-turn need to be provided. Shortcut route might lead to more accident and loss of life.

Careless 2 wheeler riders, careless tipper tanker drivers, careless bus drivers, careless school transport drivers. The 2 main reasons for this are lack of fear of law and lack of safety awareness. If authorities were strictly enforcing traffic rules and punishing defaulters, half the road deaths could be avoided.
Secondly safety awareness has to be enforced from childhood. Unfortunately our school curriculum does not imbibe safety and people take things for granted and find thrill in challenging the authorities.

Yeah .... all we need is more speed breakers. I am being sarcastic over here. Every time i hear that the solution of accidents is speed breakers, i laugh at the stupidity of people demanding it.

Now lets assume that they put speed breakers .... then what.... i am sure that those speed breakers will be unmarked and there will be another accident because of it.

I have driven extensively in India during my recent visit here and i can tell one thing for certain is that there are absolutely no rules followed. These are the things i noticed,
    - On the highway, trucks drive on the lane that is suppose to be the fast lane.
    - A vehicle joining the highway, joins straight to the fast track, i.e, the right lane.
    - I have even seen some idiots on two wheeler riding on the fast lane.
    - Any one joining the main road dont even look for any oncoming vehicle.
    - When building the roads the safety of users is not considered ( Just check any u-turns on the highway fro surathkal to bc road, there is no separate lane provided!!!!)
    - I have seen reckless two-wheeler rides all over the place.
    - Some idiots drive on the wrong side of the road to get to their destination sooner and possibly to save fuel. (such drivers/riders should be put into jail for putting their lives as well as the lives of other road users in danger.)

YES Sir, You are right. Creating speedbreakers are a Kneejerk reaction by the Police , to pacify the people of the locality who always demand it whenever an accident happens. But once the speedbreaker is in place they will not do anything to get it painted periodically or inform the Corporator when the paint wears off. In the process, all the right thinking and law abiding motorists have to suffer backaches while going across these speedbreakers. Is there anyone who can be approached for resolving this and also for proper lane driving . As you mentioned , it's a nightmare to travel on the roads when slow moving vehicles use the lanes meant for fast moving vehicles.

    You are absolutely right.
Nobody in India Knows the way to drive as per rules and regulations, once i was driving the right way (having learnt to drive to rules in Bahrain) and was stopped by a traffic cop who did not even know the rule which "i was supposedly breaking" and when i just buzzed him with strong language as he was trying to rip me off. I realized that you cannot change a nation which is well set in the idiot mode. folks and people back home think just by knowing how to drive a vehicle - 2 or 4 wheels does make them know the right of way style which is incidentally according to them the "Scientific way of driving". So many people just does not have the common sense to even use the rear view mirror right - what to say about rest. God save whoever drives in India.
I Pray every time for my own safety and ones who travel with me whenever i drive or is driven around when on vacation.

Some bike riders are riding their two wheelers in a horrible speed and the sufferers are pedestrians and other vehicles who move at that stretch. However the Traffic Police and MCC have to install speed breakers in such accident prone areas to save lives of public.
