JEDDAH, Feb 16: The hike in flour prices and the shortage of flour has led to a bread crisis at the beginning of this year. A number of bakers assure that loafs have been reduced in size and number to compensate the flour price increase, while others have closed their bakeries. The price of flour jumped up from SR80 to SR100 per 20 kg and to SR120 in the black market.
There are only two types of bread out of 300 that have certain standard regarding weight, size and number, which are Samuli bread and Syrian bread.
Faiz Saleh Hamadah, head of the National Bakeries Committee at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that the chamber’s specified standard is 500 grams of bread per SR1.
Hassan Al-Maghrabi, a Jeddah baker, said that his bakery has reduced loaves from 500 gram to 420 grams per SR1 for Samuli bread and to 400 grams per SR1 for Syrian bread.
