Mangaluru, Apr 13: Street vendors under the banner of CITU on Monday Aprll 13 staged a protest in front of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) opposing the civic body’s eviction drive of petty shops.

Numerous street vendors came out in protest against the MCC's eviction drive as well as poor implementation of the Street Vendors Act. They were later detained by the police.

Addressing the protesters, honorary president of CITU Sunil Kumar Bajal said, "We have come here to gherao the MCC. From past few weeks eviction of street vendors has increased in Ladyhill area, KSRTC area, Lalbagh and other areas. In the past they (MCC workers) used to come during the day, but now they are attacking the shops even during the night like robbers. Street vendors are physically assaulted and their things destroyed."

He further alleged, "The evicted street vendors' goods are taken home by the workers and officials, which is really sad and shameless. From past many days street vendors have been demanding their goods to be returned without any fine, but in vain. No one is allowed to assault street vendors as we have a law now, but the MCC officials are violating the law. We have protested many times in the past, but we do not see any changes in the officials.

"The reason for the increase in the eviction drive near Ladyhill area, KSRTC and Lalbagh areas is the upcoming national athletics event to be held at the end of this month. The chief minister and other high profile people will be visiting Mangala Stadium, and if they see street vendors near the area MCC will feel ashamed, so they have sped up the drive. Today we have come here to gherao the MCC. We do not fear getting arrested, we are ready to go to jail."

Lashing out at the state government, he said, "The chief minister of the state is anti-poor. The Congress government should wake up and must feel the heat of our protest. After today's protest if they continue the drive, we will demonstrate with black flags in front of the Mangala Stadium and if necessary we will get inside the stadium too. We will also gherao KPCC president Parameshwar when he arrives here. We will spoil the image of the MCC on April 30 (day of Athletics Federation Cup inauguration). During the opening ceremony we will demonstrate with black flags. This is a warning to MCC. We have come here to demand our rights, and we will fight till we get them."

When the street vendors tried to enter the MCC office, the police surrounded them and all the protestors were detained and taken to the police station.

So this is why all those shops disappeared outside mangala swimming pool.

First there were only 2 bhel puri stalls. Now, from the start of that road , all the way to the library there is an omlette shop, Shorma, Kulfi, a van selling dosas and a few other shops. All this might add to the bustling landscape of Mangalore but the problem is that the people who come to visit these shops park their car on the road occupying one lane.Only one narrow lane is left for cars and pedestrians. Footpath is completely occupied by the vendors.

It's a harrowing experience trying to walk in the evening from 7 to 9. One has to constantly look over the shoulder to see if other cars are approaching to avoid getting sandwiched between 2 cars.On top of this there's a steady stream of motorcycles going the wrong way on this narrow road. The other day I also had an argument with a biker going the wrong way. Parking space is available further away near the stadium but people prefer to park right next to the shops and eat in their car.

Shorma guy is back. Omelet chap has returned but in a rickshaw so that he can vanish quickly during a raid. It's much more peaceful now but I have a feeling that all of them will be back by the end of this month.

Is MCC assures that after these street vendors evacuation is Mangalore City will become clean and neat???
I agree with MCC for evacuation of street vendors to keep our city clean and neat, but same time they have to do some arrangements for these vendors daily bread,
Also all of us experienced in difference in most of the items whenever we buying with these street vendors & other normal shops.
My opinion this act from MCC is only a drama for media, there is no such kind of intention on these because they have lot to do to keep city clean and neat before evacuating these vendors.

Why sympathies these people/street vendors who block the footpath and public places for their own benefit? We should support what MCC is doing and extend a helping hand to MCC in evicting all the street vendors and their stalls. I think, the MCC should also fine the big business houses who use the public places to display their items.

I think, this MCC campaign should be part of Modis Clean-up campaign. Whatever people think both Modis drive for clean India and MCC drive for clean-up street vendors is good for the society.

We are blaming ‘society’, yet we are society. So to make it a better place, we must change ourselves first.
Remember this quote – I don’t want to protect the environment. I want to create a world where the environment doesn’t need protecting.

Respect yourself, respect others and respect your environment. Please put your litter in the BIN! Be cool & don’t litter!

If allowed to use the footpaths freely & without hesitation for business purpose, then there would be hardly any place left for public to walk. It is true that, question of someone’s livelihood but that may also endanger people’s life if they start walking on the roads because footpaths are filled with goods.
MCC is moving in right direction in regularizing unlawful street business.
Most of the police here look like enjoying their duty rather than punishing the wrong doers. Let our corporation come out with alternative arrangements to help these street vendors.

I feel really sympathy for street vendors,on their eviction from the footpath. But MCC's duty is to keep the city clean and neat.Vendors might have been given advance notice but they took it granted for everything and continued their business, violating the orders and behaved as if they are like the kings ignoring the MCC orders.Which is unaccepted and they must respect the MCC orders and should have made alternative arrangements. Now there is no use of decrying MCC eviction drive. They have been given enough freedom but they flatly ignored it.Meantime I am also not agreeing with MCC's overnight decision of eviction drive with so much of rigidity.Vendors might have been advised to vacate the place and make the way politely but they used tough stand on poor vendors. This is very sad.I request the MCC authorities to look into the matter and solve the issue amicably without putting the vendors in trouble.Because they are doing their business for their livelihood.Vendors should not take the law into their hands.Everything should be within the limit, should not cross the limit. It should not be like"More the freedom, more the nuisance and encroachment".That is their city, they must also held responsible for keeping the city clean.

MCC is doing the right act. Foot paths are for people to walk on. They are not for street vendors. One side shop owners are paying the taxes and doing the business. Other side these free riders are taking advantage and doing business without paying any taxes.
They are getting profit. Other side they are declaring themselves poor to suck our tax money. Evict every one of them. These vendors are health hazard to all. Congratulation to Health Dept.
Mr Madhu,Mr Barath good job. Keep the pressure before no good Politician sticks His nose inside this problem.

MCC is right. When these street vendors create nuisance on the streets people will blame the Corporation. When they are clearing them also people will blame the Corporation. Dear Mangalore city Corporation clear all of these vendors, let them think of some other ways for their livelihood. Please make the streets clean in Mangalore so that people can walk nicely on the streets. Peoples tongue is a sharp sword sharpened on both the sides.

I don’t understand why these people make business on the foot path. First of all very narrow foot paths plus this petty, petty business man.
Allowing them to continue they will even put up their small tent for the night to sleep.

    Jossey,
they do not want to relocate. they want to put their stalls in busy footpaths and crowded areas.
One can not demand a way to earn his livelihood by putting many others in problems.
Moreover it is not an overnight demolition drive. Notices have been served 2-3 months in advance to vacate the illegally occupied spaces. Still they did not vacate.

So no sympathies, we want our Mangalore neat clean, calm, peaceful.

I dont see any treachery on the vendors in the photos, Yes they are evacuated forcibly does not mean Police using brutality. Vendors should be protected. That does not mean that Vendors take the roads and block paths to sell their merchandise. They should be thought that where they can sell and where they cannot. They cannot indiscriminately block. A fruit seller on first day has just two or three baskets and within next few days he has a three wheeler and lots of fruits and almost using ten times of the space what he was occupying few days back. The sellers in the Market who pay rent, tax etc have to compete with these vendors who do not pay tax or rent is criminal offence. City corporation should take more stricter action
