Udupi, Apr 23: A family of tourists from Udupi, currently in Jammu and Kashmir, has confirmed that they are safe following a recent terror attack in Pahalgam that led to heightened security measures across the region.
Birthi Rajesh Shetty, a tourist from Udupi said “This is the first time such an attack has targeted tourists. We were shocked, but we are safe now. The route to Sonamarg is deserted, and Kashmir is effectively shut down today. It has been marked as a "Black Day" by the locals, who are deeply saddened by the attack.

Local residents have expressed their grief and frustration as such incidents affect not only safety but also the tourism and economy. Despite the closures, security has been tightened across the region. Military forces and security personnel have been deployed in key areas to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors. There is no need for tourists to panic. The government has responded swiftly, and we feel safe. We thank the authorities for taking immediate action,” he stated.
The family arrived in Srinagar on April 21 and visited popular sites including Dal Lake, local gardens, and parks on April 21 and 22. They had initially planned to travel to Pahalgam on April 23, but cancelled the visit in light of the terror attack that occurred in the area.
Following the incident, the family decided on their trip from Pahalgam to Sonamarg.
