Mangaluru: 'Deeksharambh' induction, orientation programme held at YIASCM

Mangaluru, Aug 5: The Yenepoya Institute of Arts, Science, Commerce and Management (YIASCM), a constituent unit of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) organised three-day Deeksharambh, a student induction and orientation programme on August 1, 2 and 3 for the newly inducted students for the academic year 2024.

Deeksharambh, student induction programme was organized to help new students adjust and feel comfortable in the new environment, inculcate in them the ethos and culture of the institution, help them build bonds with other students and faculty members, and expose them to a sense of larger purpose and self-exploration. The three-day Deeksharambh programme was the culmination for the 15 days student induction programme which commenced on July 15 for all the students of batch 2024 of YIASCM, Mangaluru.

The programme commenced with a formal inaugural ceremony on August 1, 2 and 3. During the three days, the ceremony began with a solemn prayer followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp ceremony by esteemed dignitaries.

Prayers was led by Jamsheer, assistant professor, department of commerce, YIASCM on August 1 and Shumair, a first-year BCOM IMA student on August 2 and 3 respectively.

On August 1, the chief guest, Rajendra D S, additional superintendent of police, Mangaluru and the guest of honour, Dr B H Sripathi Rao, pro vice chancellor of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), graced the occasion. The Inaugural session was presided over by prof Arun A Bhagwath, principal and dean of the faculty of cience at YIASCM alongside other dignitaries, including Dr Shareena P, vice principal and dean of the faculty of commerce & management, Dr Jeevan Raj and Narayan Sukumara, vice principals of YIASCM. Total of 800 students admitted to the departments of commerce, management and arts attended this Deeksharmabh programme.

On August 2, the chief guest, Najma Farooq, ACP traffic Mangaluru, and the guest of honour Dr Mohammed Gulzar Ahmed, principal of Yenepoya Pharmacy College graced the occasion. The inaugural session for that day was presided over by Prof Arun A Bhagwath, principal and dean of the faculty of science at YIASCM alongside Dr Shareena P, vice principal and dean of the faculty of commerce & management, Dr Jeevan Raj and Narayan Sukumara, vice principals of YIASCM. Around 250 students of the departments of science attended this Deeksharmabh programme.

On August 3, the chief guest, Geetha Kulkarni, ACP, CCB, Mangaluru city and the guest of honour Dr Shivaprasad K, principal, Yenepoya Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital graced the occasion. The session was presided over by prof Arun A Bhagwath, principal and dean of the faculty of science at YIASCM alongside Dr Shareena P, vice principal and dean of the faculty of commerce & management, Dr Jeevan Raj and Narayan Sukumara, vice principals of YIASCM. Above 900 students enrolled at the department of computer science attended this Deeksharmabh programme.

On day 1, Rajendra D S, additional superintendent highlighted the importance to have aim, self-confidence and interest to set and achieve the goal of life. On day 2, Najma Farooq addressed the students on discipline and created awareness on traffic rules, violations and penalisations. On day 3, Geetha Kulkarni addressed the students on cyber security. The guest of honours of all three days emphasized the importance of student induction programme at institutes and highlighted the uniqueness of YIASCM in academics and student support. Prof Arun A Bhagwath, principal and dean of faculty of Science, in his presidential remarks, discussed the human evolution, history, present innovations and future advancements in disruptive technologies and education. He contrasted the role of students to up skill and deep skill with the AI and other 21st century disruptive technologies for preparing them for the future, while emphasizing to inculcate critical and analytical thinking, communication, creativity, leadership, empathy resilience, consciousness, and problem-solving abilities in the students by the educational Institutes rather only graduating students in specific domains or specialisations.

Pinakini Shetty, lecturer, dept of management, YIASCM, delivered the welcome address and rendered the vote of thanks during the three-day Deekshrambh programme. The programme was coordinated by organizing secretary Srijana Shet, assistant professor, department of computer science.

Post lunch session on '21st Century Skills' was led by Vishwas U S Rao, regional director - South, International Federation of Inventors Association on day 1, Dr Asim Syed Sheeraz, CEO of Yenepoya Technology Incubator on day 2 and, Lalith Rai, head of BPM Operations, Infosys on day 3. Three days programme was concluded by an anti-ragging awareness skit performed by NSS students, highlighting the importance of creating a safe, diverse and inclusive environment for all students. The skit delivered a powerful message against ragging menace and was well-received by the audience.

Overall, the Deeksharambh 2024 student induction and orientation programme was a resounding success, providing new students with a comprehensive introduction to the institution’s values, expectations, and opportunities for personal and academic growth.
