Mangaluru, Jan 13: The Research Centre YEN-Refined of The Yenepoya Institute of Arts, Science, Commerce and Management (YIASCM), Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) organised an enriching and enlightening day-long national level research workshop on the 'Art of Doctoral Thesis Writing'. The workshop, meticulously planned and executed, was inaugurated by Dr B T Nandish, an accomplished dentist and the esteemed controller of examination at Yenepoya (Deemed to be University). His presence added a significant value to the event, considering his profound expertise and innovative approach in the research and academic domain.
The inauguration ceremony was marked by the traditional lighting of the lamp, symbolizing the enlightenment and knowledge the workshop aimed to impart. The warm welcome address by Dr Prashanth, associate professor from the department of management, established an atmosphere for an immersive learning experience.
Dr B T Nandish, in his thought-provoking keynote address, emphasized the significance of pursuing goal-oriented and solution-focused research. Sharing his vast experience in dental research, he highlighted innovative practices like the recycling of dentures, showcasing how research can lead to cost-effective solutions in healthcare. His advice to researchers to prioritize quality over time constraints was particularly resonant, emphasising the essence of meaningful academic inquiry.
Dr Arun Bhagwath, the principal of YIASCM, further augmented the workshop's value with his presidential remarks. His emphasis on maintaining 'focus' in research to stay aligned with quality was a crucial piece of advice for budding scholars. His insights were not just theoretical but stemmed from a deep understanding of the academic rigors of research. The co-ordinator of YEN-Refined highlighted that the importance of organising the workshop 'The Art of Doctoral Writing' is to empower researchers with the essential skills, ethical principles, and collaborative opportunities necessary to produce high-quality, impactful, and original contributions in research.
The dignitaries on the dias of the inaugural programme included Dr Jeevan Raj, vice principal, Dr Namrutha S, P G coordinator of MBA, and Dr Sakeena Naseer, the head of the department of humanities and social sciences, whose presence enriched a collaborative commitment for enhancing the Institute’s research environment.
The workshop comprised four comprehensive sessions, each tailored to address key aspects of thesis writing. Dr Niyaz Panakaje, Co-ordinator of YEN-Refined, delved into the details of structuring a thesis and effectively presenting data analysis and findings. Research scholar of Srinivas University S M Riha Parvin's session on mastering referencing, citation, and bibliography was a practical guide to academic writing essentials. Assistant professor of Sri Gokarnatheshwara First Grade College Yatheen Anchan’s discussion on maintaining originality and preventing plagiarism was particularly relevant in the current academic climate, stressing the importance of academic integrity. Assistant Director of PhD programme, Yenepoya (deemed to be University) Dr Yashodhar Bhandary's session on enhancing the rigour and quality of doctoral dissertations provided invaluable insights into elevating academic work's caliber.
The workshop concluded with a valedictory programme where Dr Yashodhar Bhandary, assistant director of the PhD programme, the chief guest, acknowledged the pivotal role of Dr Arun Bhagwath in nurturing a conducive research environment at Yenepoya (Deemed to be University). He highlighted the significant increase in PhD registrations, an indication to the growing research culture within the institution.
Dr Arun Bhagwath, in his concluding remarks, emphasized the research center's commitment to elevating research quality, its impact on societal issues and publishing in journals of global standards. He exemplified to the participants an illustration of high quality research by sharing an anecdote about the exemplary review of his PhD thesis, which received a remarkable positive feedback from the examiners. The workshop was a resounding success, as reflected in the positive feedback from the participants. It not only equipped the scholars and faculty members with vital skills in academic writing but also instilled a deeper appreciation for the details of conducting quality research. The workshop, therefore, was an effort by the research centre YEN-Refined in structuring a vibrant and impactful research culture in the Institute.
