New Delhi/Vatican City, Apr 21: A wave of global grief has followed the passing of Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88 at his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta, on Easter Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing deep sorrow, joined the chorus of tributes, highlighting the late pontiff’s profound impact on millions worldwide.

In a heartfelt condolence message, PM Modi remembered Pope Francis as "a beacon of compassion, humility, and spiritual courage." He conveyed his "deep pain" and extended condolences to the global Catholic community. "Pope Francis will always be remembered," he stated, emphasizing the lasting legacy of the spiritual leader.

Reflecting on the Pope’s life, Modi noted his early dedication to the ideals of Jesus Christ and his unwavering service to the impoverished and marginalized. "For those who were suffering, he ignited a spirit of hope," the Prime Minister remarked. He also fondly recalled their personal interactions, noting that he was "greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and all-round development." Modi further acknowledged the Pope's "affection for the people of India," a sentiment that "will always be cherished." He concluded his message with a prayer for the Pope's "eternal peace."

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the Pope's passing at 7:35 am on Monday, India time. Pope Francis had been battling respiratory ailments and pneumonia for an extended period.

PM Modi had consistently admired the Pope's dedication to serving humanity, extending an invitation for him to visit India during their meetings. "I admire his commitment to serve people and make our planet better. Also invited him to visit India," Modi shared on X following a meeting at the G7 Summit's Outreach Session in Borgo Egnazia last year.

Their connection deepened in October 2021 when Pope Francis granted PM Modi a private audience at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, marking the first meeting between an Indian Prime Minister and a Pope in over two decades. The last such meeting occurred in June 2000, when late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee met Pope John Paul II.

India and the Holy See maintain amicable relations, established in 1948. India is also home to Asia's second-largest Catholic population, underscoring the significance of this connection.
