Mangaluru, Dec 31: Scholarship distribution of ninth year of Bharath social and welfare trust ® (BSWT) for the year 2023 was held at 3 pm on December 30 at Ravindra Kalabhavan of Mangalore University college at Hampankatta in the city.

President of BSWT N Amin welcomed the guests and said, “All are aware of the situation. Society is on fire. If students are with good people they become good citizens. Otherwise a polluted environment gets created in society.

“Humanity is not our choice. It is our duty and we are shouldering it for the past nine years. We are making an honest effort to reciprocate to the issues of society for the past nine years.”

VC of Mangalore Univesity Dr Jayaraj Amin said, “Education is not limited to classroom. It should grow through thinking, health, skill and values. One should have concern for society. When we have selfish thoughts issue gets created. We should grow as complimentary to a healthy society. Then the education gets its real meaning. I was very happy to know about social concern of BSWT team. Their service which is done without any propaganda is really appreciable.

Renowned journalist Vijayalaxmi Shibaroor (Vijaya Times Digital Media), who is known for her social concern was felicitated with Person of the year-2023 award by BSWT. Replying to the felicitation, Vijayalaxmi said, “Ungrateful society does not accept good deeds. Awards of this kind inspire me to continue as a journalist. I also get courage to fight and don’t sit quiet as you all are with me. Journalism is an adventure. It is not just asking opinions but has tremendous power. You might be aware of its strength through social media interaction on your mobiles.

“Without analysing every issue, you believe in everything. The main motto of media is to make the society aware. That is why they are given special honour. Society has faith on them as they are well read and have enormous knowledge. That is why it is also called as watch dog of democracy. However, today media of democracy have become trumpets of ruling parties. Our motto has turned into why we have to bother.

“We are like dead citizens. Neither elders nor teachers inculcate questioning habits in today’s children. We should question. Neither the government nor the people representatives are doing developmental works from their own money. It may be work related to smart city or road development. All works are done through tax payers’ money. It is our duty to see that the taxpayers’ money is not misused. If the works of government are not right, we should question the same and not sit quiet. I love society. I will work for the society till my last breath.”

Guests of the event Melwyn Vas, principal of Milagres PU college and Dr Asha Latha, principal of Gokarnanatha first grade college expressed their opinions.

Harish Kumar Kuttadka, retired superintendent of Mangalore university presided over the function and said, “Democracy is our breath. Protecting harmony of our country is our responsibility. In today’s society where education is commercialized, less jobs are created. That is why children should not get addicted to mobile and internet but should be more creative. They should learn with dedication. We are passing through a crucial period. If it continues, living may become difficult. It can be set right only through proper education.”

Symbolical scholarship cheques were handed over to some students on the dais by guests. In total 175 students were given scholarships through various counters.

Music teacher Lavanya Sudarshan and team sang group song. Dr Arun Ullal competed the event and also proposed a vote of thanks.
