Tata Motors' August Sales Down Three Percent


Mumbai, Sep 1 (IANS): Automobile major Tata Motors Thursday reported a decline of three percent in its overall sales for August, which stood at 64,078 units.

The company's domestic sales of commercial and passenger vehicles in the month under review went down by two percent at 59,874 units from 60,797 units sold in August 2010.

The company's exports declined by 18 percent in August at 4,204 units as compared to 5,157 units in the like period of 2010.

Segment-wise, commercial vehicle sales in the domestic market for the month under review grew by 21 percent at 43,045 units, compared to 35,585 units sold in August last year.

"LCV (light commercial vehicle) sales were at 26,344, a growth of 27 percent over August last year. M&HCV (medium and heavy commercial vehicle) sales stood at 16,701, a growth of 12 percent over August last year," the company said in a statement.

The August passenger vehicles sales in the domestic market including distribution offtake of Fiat cars was down by 34 percent at 17,898 units (16,829 Tata plus 1,069 Fiat) from 27,024 units in the corresponding period of last year.

"Sales of Tata passenger vehicles for August 2011 are at 16,829, lower by 33 percent over August last year," the statement said.

The company further said that production was resumed at its Sanand plant, after a temporary suspension for maintenance and to rationalise and align inventory for about a fortnight, which affected Nano sales in August.

"Consequently, sales of the Tata Nano from the company to dealerships were limited to 1,202 units, lower by 85 percent over August last year," the statement further said.

The company reported a growth of two percent in its cumulative sales including exports for the fiscal year so far, which stood at 320,877 units as compared to 315,460 units.
