Mangaluru, Oct 10: The annual athletic meet of St Aloysius Institute of Education was conducted in the Centenary Grounds. The ceremony began with the Marchpast headed by College Sports Secretary Harish Kumar followed by team leaders and their members with flags.
The chief guest of the event, Dr Suresh Kumar T (former Physical Education director, St Ann’s College of Education, (Autonomous) Mangaluru inaugurated the Athletic Meet. In his speech, he said, “Education and Sports should be given equal importance in school and colleges, because sports can be used as recreation, profession, competition and therapy. Sports activities not only give exercise to the body, but also relaxes the mind and unite people. Sports activities help people to achieve physical fitness and mental stability. Sports is an important part of human life as it keeps people active and enthusiastic. Teachers must develop a pro-active attitude towards sports as it develops discipline, leadership, respect, unity, friendship and followership in students.” Further in his speech, he asked the athletes to engage in major or minor games to maintain fitness and healthy living.
The chief guest honoured the winners of various events held prior to the sports meet with medals and certificates. Rev. Fr Melwin J Pinto SJ (Rector), presided over the function and in his address urged the students to be teachers who are both emotionally and physically fit. Fr Dr Praveen Martis SJ (director) appreciated the efforts of the staff and the students. Dr Farita Viegas (principal), delivered the welcome address. Santhosh Furtado, (convenor), announced the winners’ names. Harish Kumar (sports secretary), proposed the vote of thanks. Namitha Martis, compered the programme.
The sports meet had included hoisting of the college flag, team inspection, oath, Mass PT exercises, Track and Field events and prize distribution. The students displayed sportsmanship and teamwork qualities during the occasion.
