Mangalore, Jan 28: As a part of implementing the ‘Clean City’ project in Bajpe near here, the second phase of removing petty shops located by the roadside was completed on Thursday January 27. It may be recalled that IAS officer, Rohini Sindhuri from the office of the district commissioner, had given two days’ time for the eviction of the petty shops, during her visit here three days back.
While most of the shopkeepers vacated the shops on their own, some others unwillingly did so, as the backhoe was pressed into service, and policemen provided security for the operation team.
The shopkeepers, who have been relocated within the market premises, wanted facilities to be improved in the market. Some said they may join together to protest, if the things do not improve. Some petty owners lamented that the shops of petty businessmen are being evicted, while illegal buildings in Bajpe remain untouched.
Gram panchayat president, Sahul Hamid, and secretary, Abubakker, oversaw the demolition drive.
