Udupi: Student Megha Shetty (18) Drowns in Tank

Udupi, Dec 4: Megha Shetty (18), daughter of Shobha Shetty from Kurkal Nooji near Kaup, died after slipping and drowning in a tank near her house on Friday December 3. The girl, who had been undertaking agricultural work, was in a hurry to wash her feet and hands before rushing to the college, when the tragedy occurred.

Megha was a second PU student of St John’s College in Shankarapura near here. Doing farm work early in the morning before going to college used to be her routine. Megha belongs to a poor family, and her father, Sanjeev Shetty, who went to Mumbai to eke out a living several years ago, has never come back. On Friday too, shen Megha was doing some farm work, her mother asked her to hurry as she would be late to college. As soon as she slipped and drowned, several local youth tried to save her, but in vain.

Before the fire brigade arrived from Udupi, her body had been retrieved and shifted to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead. A case in this connection was registered in Shirva police station.

Megha is survived by her mother and brother, a ninth standard student. Her mother, shocked by the sudden loss of her daughter, fell unconsicious.

Megha was very good at studies, sports and extra curricular activities. She was very much liked by her friends, classmates and teachers alike because of her friendly and soft nature. The teachers and students of the college rushed to the scene of the accident after knowing about the tragedy, and a number of them were seen weeping inconsolably.
