Mangalore, Sep 25: Viani Antonio D'Cunha has made his hometown proud by winning the bronze medal at the National Sub-Junior Chess Championship 2010 held in Delhi earlier this month.
The championship was organised by the Delhi Chess Association under the auspices of the All India Chess Federation.
Viani, an International Norm Holder chess player twice, scored 8.5 points in 11 rounds to bag the bronze medal. He managed the first three rounds easily before holding former under-10 world champion Sahaj Grover to a draw.
Shreeshan from Shimoga, former Asian silver medallist Karthikeyan Murali of Tamil Nadu and under-12 Commonwealth gold medallist Siddhant Mohapatra of Orrisa, G Akash and Chaithanya of Tamil Nadu gave him tough fights.
He lost two games to Maharashtra champion Shardul Gagare and statemate Girish Koushik.
The win has made Viani eligible to participate in the Sub-Juniors Olympiad and World Youth Chess Championship along with two exposure trips for Norms in 2011.
