Beltangady, Jul 31: Commuters had a torrid time on Charmadi Ghat due to heavy traffic congestion on Friday July 30. It is learnt that a truck that has stuck in the muddy sludge on the seventh bend of the ghat is the cause for the long line of vehicles on the ghat.

Commuters had to bear the inconvenience for more than four hours. AC and sleeper buses that were going to Ujire and Mangaluru from outstation districts and trucks that approach the ghat through Kottigehara also increased the traffic jam. More than five km long line of vehicles was seen on both sides of the ghat. Vehicles going towards Kottigehara were stopped at the Charmadi police gate in order to ease the congestion. They were let one by one.

The traffic jam was eased by teams led by Beltangady circle inspector Shivakumar. Team of inspector of Dharmasthala Krishnakanth Aiyappa Patil, social worker Charmadi Hasanabba and team and locals were involved in the operation.

Daily commuters and those who were going to hospitals had a tough time as mobile network was not available on the ghat section. Incessant rain also increased the agony of the people stuck in the jam.

Inspector Shivakumar said, “We are not allowing heavy vehicles to proceed towards Kottigehara via Charmadi Ghat. But is seen that some heavy vehicles are moving towards Ujire from Kottigehara. This issue will be discussed with Moodigere police station personnel and smooth movement of traffic will be ensured.”
