Kundapur, Jul 30: Stone inscription belonging to the times of King Immadi Harihara of Vijayanagara Empire that ruled Karnataka, is found in Kailkere area of Japti village of the taluk by Rajeshwara Upadhyaya Kancharti. Shruthesh Acharya Moodubelle extended cooperation in reading and understanding the stone inscription.
The stone inscription that is found is six feet in length and two and a half feet in width with 54 lines of inscription. The stone used is granite. The language used in the inscription contains both Kannada and Sanskrit.
The inscription starts with the Shloka ‘Sri Ganadhipataye Namah’ and contains details of Hiranyodaka charity offering done for the goodness of all people, at the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Virupaksha God of Pumpa Kshethra by Pandari Dikshitas of Vashista Gothra on Monday, November 10, 1394 (Shaka year 1316), when Immadi Harihara used to rule the Vijayanagara Empire.
Mallappa, younger brother of Karanika Singanna was ruling the Barakuru state during the reign of Sri Veera Harihara Maharaya. This stone inscription contains details of the donation of land and other material possessions done by Mallappa in the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Vidyaranya Sripadam of Sringeri to the three vidwans. The details say that he gave 130 Varaha Gadyanas, 468 Kati Gadyanas, one Pratapa Gadyana and lands of Barakooru including Kavilakeri, Volagathuru, Kandaura and Honnahaladi (present names Kailkere Valkuthuru, Kandavara and Honadi).
Mention of Kanchika Devi Volagathura Devaswa and Brahmara Bana is made in the inscription. Similarly, mention is made of paddy fields and people while identifying the Chatuseeme. At the end of the inscription is a Shapashaya sentence and the honour that will be given to people who will protect the inscription.
The inscription says that the three Vidwans who received the donation have to donate three Hada oil to God Horagana Somaiah (present Sri Mahalingeshwara temple of Valkathuru) on the festival of Mahanavami every year. It also says that the devotees of God Somaiah and the Halas of Mooru Keri have to see that no inconvenience is caused to Haravaris that are donated. The inscription has the consent of Mallappa on behalf of Sri Veera Harihara Maharaya.
