Mangaluru: New crop of cheaters send link, obtain OTP, rob money

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 16: In several instances which happened in the city, bank customers who got message that their accounts have been blocked pending updation of KYC documents, were asked to press the link enclosed. By this way, the robbers have siphoned off funds from the accounts of some bank customers.

The messages looked like being genuine and having emanated from nationalised banks. The customers who trusted the messages provided OTP numbers. A customer of a bank here lost Rs 63,000 while there are a few more who lost different amounts.

As soon as the link is pressed, a site which resembles official website of the bank opens. The customers are instructed to fill in information. On the basis of these details, the fraudsters open the accounts of the customers in the site after which OTP gets transmitted to the phone number linked to the accounts. The callers then collect the OTP and take away money, cyber experts stated.

SBI regional manager Harishankar, said that banks never call their customers seeking OTP numbers. He noted that because of this awareness that has got widespread, many customers called the banks concerned to enquire before providing details and therefore stopped the robbers from getting access to their accounts. He also said that banks do not send mobile links for KYC purposes.

A number of customers who grew doubtful and called the bank branches were advised to change net banking password immediately. They were also told to visit the bank and get the blocked account released.

For all online banking transactions, the cyber security should be such that the money can be debited from an account ONLY IF THE OTP IS RECEIVED FROM THE REGISTERED MOBILE AND NOT FROM ANY OTHER PHONE OR ANY OTHER METHOD. If the fraudsters find a way to get around this, then cyber security should be further tightened by some other means. Someone should invent such a method so that ALL BANKING/ONLINE FRAUDS WILL BE A THING OF THE PAST.

If cheaters get OTP , the system in bank should be that while drawing the amount by cheaters, there should be one hour gap to transfer the amounts, In the mean time when bank gets the message to debit the account, immediately one message should be send to account holder to confirm from bank. That time the account holder will come to know that it is fake OTP and not from bank. I don't know how much it works. If so, this Cyber crime drawing amount can be stop. That what I believe. Any comment welcome.

HNI's i.e. high net worth individuals should hire a cyber security consultant to plug loopholes and check for vulnerabilities in the way they conduct business online ..There is dire need of raising cyber security awareness amongst citizens .These days cyber criminals are so smart ..they have started targeted attacks on high networth individuals .. I would say Hire a Cyber security consultant and secure your self.
