Mangaluru: MLA U T Khader resents central government's move to ban Chinese apps

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 3: Former minister and MLA U T Khader, has registered his opposition to the central government's decision to ban 59 Chinese origin apps.

He questioned the rationale behind banning the Chinese apps, arguing that the ban does not in any way result in loss or harm to China. He also said that the ban on the apps does not in any way benefit India. "PM Care Fund has received Rs 30 crore through TikTok app. Let the government refund this amount. Is the government not ashamed at accepting money from them? Indians were employed in companies running Chinese apps. They have now lost their jobs. Indians were earning money through these apps. The government has placed a blanket ban on these apps just as a means of publicity stunt. This decision has dented the image of India at the international level," he claimed in a statement.

Khader said that the decision of the government has made India a laughing stock in the eyes of China.

On the issue of inhuman disposal of bodies of COVID victims at Ballari, he stated that the officials who were responsible for this lapse have not been acted against. He wanted to know whether any concession is being extended just because it is the home district of the health minister. He demanded state level inquiry into the case.

"In the coming days, there is a likelihood of the number of deaths increasing. The government hospitals do not have proper ambulance services. The government should earmark sites for the funeral of mortal remains belonging to different religions," he said.

    Dear Rodrigues,

    I agree.

Politics of symbolism has taken the toll of this country. People also think that by boycotting Chinese items and banning apps we can beat China. When we talk of long term plan many may not get convinced. They may label us as antinational.

Defeat China with the same game plan they are doing. Give subsidy, support industries to make them competent in both quality and price. Government can get compensated of this money by the way of exports. This may take couple of years but that way only we can defeat them economically.

Government should stop to deal with the situation emotionally but shrewd professionalism is required to win this trade war.

    Dear Raghav Uchil,

Very strong words. You have called my thoughts as stupid and if you think symbolism is the right way of dealing with the situation I have no problems.

I am a retiree, engineer by profession, worked worldwide in MNCs and dealt with machinery and technology in large projects. We have also seen how the Chinese v/s Indian machinery with same specification differs in price. Indian equipment are nearly 1.8 times of Chinese price. What I wrote is with my experience. Politics of symbolism will not take us anywhere but the planned strategy can.

For your information I never use Chinese make and even the mobile I have is made in Vietnam. I need not get educated from this pollical class for boycotting Chinese items. I have been doing it since many years.

By the way Raghav Uchil , can you tell me how we can beat Chinese in trade only by boycotting. You may have more information than I have.

How can you even imagine playing with tiktok or anyother chinese apps when indian were killed with iron rods defending the borders.

Forget indian govt banning, we ourself should show that disgust and remove it. Chinese may not loose much, but when our soldier are getting killed the least thing i can do is to discourage everything chinese.

Removing the first step, next create a demand , Indian entreprenaurs will rise. We should rise.
We should encourage our children to rise and fill the innovation gap. China had more poverty than indian decades ago. Its an oppertunity for a big country to look into manufacturing ..

A couple of WhatsApp group that I am a part of should be renamed the China Problem group. Ninety percent of discussions is on how China hijacked the world economy, how they do not deserve to do so, how all politicians have let us down, how they are stealing all intellectual property and how we are doomed if we do not stop downloading Tiktok.

All true. And no, this article is not about disagreeing with this narrative. This article is not about the fact that an average Chinese student in the US beats the hell of all other students (including Indians) in terms of hours she works and the only disadvantage she has is that her English is not good enough, but she is getting there.

No, this article is not about the fact that the people of China worked their butts off while Italians holidayed and French wanted a four-day workweek. No, this article is not about the fact that one cannot hire a decent machinist or a forger in India because all of them are sitting in call centres answering questions from technically-challenged Americans. Of course, I agree and support the view that China and its people do not deserve the place they have reached (I don’t want to be trolled). After all, they are intellectual property (IP) thieves and do not take four-week holidays. They should be punished.

So what is this article about? This is about an industry where China has been beaten by India. It has been shown that it’s not the government, neither the people; it’s really the companies that compete. And as far as India is concerned the people responsible for the demise of manufacturing in the county are these companies.

In 1983, I graduated out of a Mumbai engineering college considered to be one of the best. Irrespective of the branch that you studied—mechanical, electrical, civil, production, textile—80 percent of the graduates became coders for the software industry.

In 2000, I was at Bajaj Auto as human resources (HR) head (after working 15 years in technical capacity), and I was off to conduct campus interviews to hire 100 engineers who would design and build world-class motorcycles. On day 5, I was in Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai and all other regional engineering colleges (RECs). I ended up hiring ten people from 15 colleges. In every college I was told by the training and placement officer (TPO) that technology companies get preference in hiring. I asked, were designing and building an engine not technology? No, that’s manufacturing, I was told. Writing COBOL code for a bank in New York by a software company employee is technology. May be the Chinese forced us into this thinking.

The following year I wrote to all colleges. I want to be day 0 in your campus. I will give three times salary of the “so called best technology company”, but only if I am day 0. Hiring 100 engineers at three times salary was no problem for me as compared to say TCS, which had to hire 2,000 “bodies”. They could never match that salary.

And that’s how Bajaj Auto built its research and development—batch by batch. Making designing and manufacturing of motorcycles sexy and paying for it. The selection ratio was 1:15. Most of the IITs, RECs, and VJTIs had toppers who were absolutely useless. They could not draw a Carnot cycle, could not tell the difference between a diesel and petrol engine. Give them an elevation and plan they could not draw the side view. Most of them were focusing on writing code. But we found gems, we found guys who were passionate and knowledgeable but could not express in English. I started conducting interviews in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and so on.

There was another company using the same approach—TVS. Based in south India, they also built a great R&D department.

In 2005, Chinese motorcycles attacked India with products which were 30 percent cheaper. Many dealers started selling them. Press predicted demise of Indian manufacturers. But within six months they went broke. Their quality was no match to Indian motorcycles. They never came back again.

Bajaj then started attacking them in Africa. Africans had two choices: buy expensive Japanese motorcycles or cheap Chinese ones. Chinese motorcycles used to come in a box. You bought the box and took it to a mechanic and he would assemble it.

In Nigeria motorcycles are used as taxis. So no one is going to pay you a dime more than the basic requirement. In such a market Bajaj launched its fully assembled motorcycle. It was priced more than the Chinese models but less than the Japanese ones. The company set up dealerships, service centres, trained mechanics and developed a relationship with the taxi riders. Today Bajaj is a market leader. TVS is number two. The Chinese have been driven out.

You can see videos of the love that the okada (taxi) drivers have for Bajaj bikes. Country after country in Africa and in South America Indians companies captured the market driving their Chinese counterparts out.

In 2018 India became the largest manufacturer of two wheelers in the world (producing twice more than China). Indian companies have started buying out European brands. The market leader of motorcycles in Europe is not BMW, its KTM, which is part-owned by Bajaj. China is slipping fast not only in the manufacturing of bikes, but also in the manufacturing of components. Indian suppliers are beating them hands down. Between three Indian companies—Hero, Bajaj and TVS—India today dominates the world motorcycle market.

Why was this not done in TVs, computers, mobile phones, pharmaceuticals and other industries? It’s the same country, same labour laws, same infrastructure, but not the same entrepreneurs. Indian businessmen are characterized by a myopic vision—it’s both, short-term outlook as well as geographically limited. Of course, the government also does not help.

So who is responsible for the Chinese dominance—the government, people or the corporates?

I think it’s all the three. When even ITI-trained turners and fitters refuse to work in a shop floor, when a stock broker is paid more than an engineer, when typing code is mistaken for technology, when governments refuse to amend antique labour and land laws, when corporates think local and not global, and finally when you, yes you the reader, will not send your son or daughter to work on the shop floor, each one of these factors is as responsible for the Chinese dominance as as their “ethical corruption”. We have been looted because we left our doors and windows open.

No, this article is not supporting the Chinese. How dare they work so hard? And how dare they obey a communist government? We should stop buying all their goods and we will make everything in our country. But we will work nine to five with a three-day weekend. We will overcome. One day.

Previously these electrical goods were manufactured in India and were more durable then Chinese. But the corporates wants more profit by importing them from India.

Communists dictators make you work like a machine, no question asked, from childhood they brainwash you.Basically it is a slavery. No freedom at all for a total control, not only satisfy their dictator commands but also to gain supremacy and to conquer the world.

With this evil virus they have shown their colors also seems planing for more viruses. Here and there new virus outbreak news in china. They might be planning more of viruses so to make world economy to fall so that they can lend finances to affected countries as they are currently doing for smaller nations for their influence and control. That's why seems so much hard work going on or Chinese are made to work hard for this agenda

Book of Revelation foretold this in 13:4

"They worshipped the dragon because it had given authority to the beast. They also worshipped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast, and who can fight a war with it?"

Do you think without any wicked plan they have done all this? This capitalism and communism war going on for more than 100 years now, ie between free world and communists. During communist revolution in Russia and china how many millions people vanished god only knows. Never trust ruthless godless communists.

Hahahaha I can’t stop laughing at your comments. Please do some research to know if whatever you are trying to say is truth. I haven’t seen in my eyes people there eating such things never in more than 10 tier1/2 cities I have been to atleast.
Yes there may be some little crazy guys which may exist everywhere. It’s all media Created hype, in India we say that yakkuu they eat so so so.. in China they say India is so poor country and people here travel ok top of trains, all these are gimmicks of media to show each countries in poor light but the reality is that , majority of people to people have no issues , and lives in harmony. Just that geopolitical issues are forcing things to make it complex in people’s eyes.. everyone what to be number.
I request you busy there once, and you will wonder to say they are atleast 30-50 years ahead of us. If we all work hard and put our sincere efforts we can catch up in 15 years, for that the first level corruptions to the end person should be weeded our. Make giving bribe leagal and taking bridge illigal, just see how many heya caught

Nobody can compete them means allow these chinese to compromise or destroy Indian IT infrastructure including individual gadgets. As they have cunningly wrecked the world economy and millions of jobs through this virus and now allow them to ruin our IT infrastructure through malwares embedded in this apps? Their agenda is virus to wreck the economy then incursions, destroy infrastructure and then invasion to bring their communist rule. For that they use race / religion / countries against countries etc temporary to create discords and finally try to bring their godless communist rule everywhere. That's what there planning worldwide.

Instead of going with knee jerk reactions like banning Chinese applications or Chinese goods, government should come out with long drawn plan to take on Chinese.

First and foremost is subsidy and support price to Indian companies to develop and manufacture thoseitems presently we are procuring from China, be it medicine intermediates, electronics, electrical items etc... down up to toys. India should be able to produce quality items and compete with Chinese products in the World market.

We need to defeat China this way. We need to make our base in technology strong and wage a war in the world market. With this cheap publicity to boycott Chinese items, we will not be able to defeat China.

I fully agree with your thoughts.

But we must also look at another issue...

An INDIAN company develops a great, import substituting, product/service. And then it wants to expand, etc. It needs big finance injection of $500 million.

And a Chinese company steps in with $500 million.

There are already several INDIAN businesses with substantial Chinese ownership. In fact, the Government promotes FDI.

So what happens to the INDIAN business now?

@MR.Kunder. you have well penned your thoughts. I have gone through above some of the comments. I assume that many of our people dont understand the implication of banning apps, unless it is really breaching the national digital security .

Imagine if Europe/USA ban all our( Indian) IT service/Consultancy service( BPO) how painful it would be for us.
Instead of banning drama, govt. has to develop Indian talent .nt

Just imagine how China has developed their talent. They have sponsored scholarship 1000 student for foreign education( skills) . Their exceptions is even if 10% of the student come back to chine with great skills it would be helpful to china;s development . This was started since 1990 and with in 30 years china is almost no.1 globally.

If Indian Govt. dont think for future road map, all would be just a drama.

It is good that those apps were removed. There are many allegations of spying and other harmful activities. The ccp demands every company to be loyal to them. Jobs can be created here if people have the will . There are many indian apps to replace them. This was good move even if you keep politics aside. There is no benefit of opposing political rivals here.
People will only think that they are pro china.

Completely agree with the views expressed by U T Khader. The bhakts will troll him though. GOI has achieved nothing by this ban - the ban is a mosquito bite for an elephant.

It is important to keep away from mosquitoes. They are spreading deadliest diseases like dengue, malaria etc. These apps have Chinese propaganda, Better to kill these mosquitoes for better India.

I agree with the points made by MLA Khader.

The Chinese apps employed thousands of Indians. These Indians have overnight become jobless because of the decision from the top.

Will the Chinese apps diappear from the earth because of the Indian ban?

No. People in virtually every other country - INCLUDING the US of A - use these apps.

Indian businesses AND individuals are still dependent on the goods and raw materials imported from China.
