Mangaluru, Jun 14: June 14 is observed as World Blood Donor day to create awareness among people the importance and benefits of blood donation. By donating blood we not only help one live but also help ourselves.

On account of World Blood Donor Day 2020, A J Hospital is organizing Voluntary Blood Donation Month in the hospital from June 14 to July 14. The voluntary blood donors will be issued with ‘Privilege Card’ which entails them to 25% discount on O P investigations.

Why should one donate blood?
• Your blood donation can save up to 3 lives
• There is no substitute for blood.
• Prevents death by donating blood.
• Every seconds, someone needs blood.
• Donating blood could favour healthy lifestyle.

Who can donate blood?
• Any healthy adult, both male & female can donate blood.
• Men once in every 3 months & women every 4 months.
• Age: Between 18 and 60 years.
• Hemoglobin (Hb): not less than 12.5g/dl.
• Body weight: Not less than 46 kg.
• Blood pressure: Should be within normal limits.

Health benefits of donating blood:
• Reduces donor’s risk of heart attack.
• Enhances the production of new blood cells.
• Burns calories.
• Reduces cancer risk.
• Regular donors have reduced incidence of hypertension and other vascular abnormalities.
• Free mini physical check-up.

You could be a SDP (Single Donor Platelets) Donor too.

How does the Platelet Donation Procedure go?
• Platelet donation procedure is done by Apheresis machine.
• Only platelets are separated, rest of the blood is re-infused to the donor.
• Minimum 60 minutes are required for pre-donation testing and 60-90 minutes for SDP procedure.
• Platelets in donor are replenished / recovered in 48 hours. One can donate platelets 24 times in a year or 4 times in a month only.

Use of SDP (Platelets)
• Patient of Dengue, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Leukemia, Sepsis, etc.
• To stop internal bleeding in various disorders.
• Major organ transplant recipients.

Why SDP?
• Increases Platelet count by 6 fold, compared to RDP (Random Donor Platelet)
• Reduces hospital stay in 80% recipients
• Reduces exposure to multiple donors.

Who can donate Platelets?
• Age: 18 – 60 years
• Weight: More than 60 kg
• Hb: 12.5g/dl
• Platelet Count: More than 2 lac

In view of Covid-19 scare, many people are hesitating to visit hospitals and donate blood.
