Domestic returnees continue to raise Karnataka coronavirus cases, tally 2,922


Bengaluru, May 30 (IANS): Continuing the trend of past several days, domestic returnees formed the lion's share of 141 Covid cases in the past 24 hours, raising the state's tally to 2,922, an official said on Saturday.

"New cases reported from Friday 5 p.m. to Saturday 5 p.m. are 141," said a health official.

Among the 93 returnees, 83 had a travel history to Maharashtra, constituting 59 per cent.

Returnees from other states included three from Punjab and one from Tamil Nadu.

Domestic travel returnees in total constituted 66 of the new cases.

Unlike earlier, most corona cases in Karnataka now are returnees from other states, mainly from Maharashtra.

Incidentally, after many days, cases with contact history have increased, recording 43 such cases.

In the past 24 hours, cases spiked in Udupi, Yadgir, Davangere, Vijayapura, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Bengaluru Urban and Bidar.

Among the new cases, Bengluru Urban contributed (33), followed by Yadgir (18), Dakshina Kannada (14), Udupi and Hassan (13 each), Vijayapura (11), Bidar (10), Shivamogga (6), Davangere (4), Kolar (3), Kalaburagi, Uttara Kannada, Mysuru and Dharwad (2 each), Belagavi, Chitradurga, Tumkur and Bengaluru Rural (1 each).

In Bengaluru Urban, 10 cases were contacts of earlier case 2,180.

Meanwhile, 103 patients got discharged in the past 24 hours, 43 from Kalaburagi, 21 from Bengaluru Urban, 20 from Davangere, five from Kolar, three each from Bagalkote and Bidar, two each from Raichur and Dakshina Kannada and one each from Gadag, Vijayapura, Chikkaballapura and Udupi.

Among the new cases, 90 are men and 51 women, including 13 children below 10.

On Saturday, a 47-year-old woman from Bidar died of the virus.

In the past 24 hours, Karnataka has tested 15,728 persons, of which 15,274 tested negative.

In total, 2.8 lakh samples have been tested so far, of which 2.73 lakh were negative.

Top five places with active cases in the state include Mandya (224), Yadagiri (231), Udupi (170), Bengaluru Urban (153) and Bidar (132).

Of the total, Bengaluru Urban has so far accounted for 10 deaths, followed by Kalaburagi (7), Dakshina Kannada (6) and Vijayapura (5) among others.
