Buses crowded, total violation of social distancing norms in Udupi

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, May 21: Even though buses are allowed to operate in the city, only one of the several bus operators began operations. Meanwhile, complaints concerning lack of social distancing by commuters within the bus has surfaced.

Although the administration had clearly stated against the standing of travellers inside the bus, people were seen not following the basic order along the route from Udupi to Kundapur.

The flouting of the law by bus operators and the commuters comes across as a direct violation of the order issued by the Udupi deputy commissioner (DC). The order by the DC also maintained that the buses would be allowed to ply with only 30 per cent capacity. However, the crowded buses on the roads spoke a different story altogether.

As per protocol, the bus operators were also required to offer hand sanitizer to all the passengers on board. Unfortunately, new passengers were not provided with this service. But, it was extended to only those who had boarded the bus from the departure point.

Meanwhile, it is claimed that the overcrowding of the bus is due to the limited number of buses in service. The bus conductors have been given the responsibility to ensure that all passengers on board are wearing face masks. Shockingly, this too is being overlooked by people. City buses are likely to start operations in Udupi from June 1, but it is already looking to be a problematic situation where the bus operators are failing to adhere to mandatory health guidelines issued by the government.

The same thing is gonna happen in M'lore too if bus transportation is allowed! But I understand, people can't afford to go in two wheelers or cars all the time. But it doesn't mean you have to break rules. The whole world is trying to maintain Social distance. If you can't, then stay home!

This was very much expected! The rules & regulations were only to resume pvt bus operations under pressure from cash starved bus lobby! These chaps, now, will do anything to increase their daily collection & cover the lockdown losses at the earliest!

Now, what's the efficacy of quarantining/lockdown of a select group of people when on the other hand public (infected, asymptomatic, old young, sick, etc) is being freely transported in hordes in overcrowded buses???

Now cases are bound to swell up in days to come!

We are daily traveling from Udupi to Kundapura, and this is the daily situation in the buses. If we object about this with conductor they say what we can do. Many of our co traveler also complaint to respective authorities like AC, DC itself but no action is taken against it so far. This bus people giving false statement in paper that no collection but the fact is they are putting people like before. If it continues means it's better making bus owner compulsory to travel in every trip with people that tone he may know the difficulty of passengers or it's best to leave the owner of bus in quarantine centers so that time at least he may understand the value of life. If there is no value for human life why we did lockdown for so long time? Also why we still helping people to reach their homeland? In this condition also owner making lobby and giving false statement to media. If you facing so much loss why you are running bus? Like other buses don't run the bus. Since we don't had vehicles so we travelling on bus else we would have gone by own vehicle. Since daijworld is doing great work in this conditions. We daily travelers request Daijiworld to esclate the issue to the concern authority and save the traveler from putting their life to threate.

Now this is the time, you are responsible for yourself.

Please take safety precautions whatever you can otherwise you will be exposed to the deadly virus.

If you do not do this, you will have to face the consequences.

We cannot blame someone and keep quiet. Time has come to protect ourselves. If this is followed you will also protect others.

Public who are standing outside cannot make out how many seats are filled up. Its the duty of conductor and driver to stand at the entrance of the doors and sanitize them and send inside. When thirty numbers are over...right poyee... otherwise, in ordinary situation how they scream, shout for not giving change or little delayed to get down or get in....same way. They only fill the bus like market...once the bus starts public cant get in right??

Cynthia, these rules are only on paper, but who is there to enforce them? Also, such protocols are practically impossible to follow in an overpopulated place like ours! We just cannot emulate rules followed by advanced countries here! The bus owner's only worry will be to enhance as much collection as possible, rest who is bothered!

In such a situation, the entire enforcement of lockdown/containment/quarantine etc. of a few set of people doesn't make any sense whatsoever, what say?

In another week, Mangalore too will be same like udipi!

    Jai Hind!!

You cannot blame Mumbai people. Then you start blaming people from DK, Kundapura. They are residents of our country. They paid tax to the Govt. And Govt has responsibility to look after them .

The responsibility of maintaining social distancing and wearing masks does not fall only on government, officials or bus operators. Each and every citizen is responsible for themselves and their families and for everyone else. I fail to understand why people cannot follow guidelines made for their own benefit.

What social distancing can one follow in a 35 seater compact bus with no control on crowd intake in a public transport system with such a big population? The public itself in their need & hurry to reach their destinations in time will throw all caution to the winds & catch the first bus they get!!

When the health ministry said that we have to live with the virus, it means that continuous lockdown is not practical. But social distancing has to be maintained at all costs. Please don't take things out of context
