Mangaluru, May 20: The city corporation, alarmed by the serious threat posed to environment, people and properties by the huge landslide suffered by the city's garbage dump at Pachanady during August last year, has undertaken construction of a huge wall at the spot where the landslide happened. This wall is aimed at affectively stop recurrence of such incidents in future.
The project, undertaken at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore, may be completed in about two months’ time. It is planned to stop garbage heap from sliding downhill towards Mandara located about 700 metres away from the garbage dump. In the previous incident, houses, property etc were damaged and people had become homeless overnight.

People had demanded for the construction of the wall before the commencement of the next rainy season, but election to the corporation and coronavirus pandemic delayed the execution. The work has finally begun. The wall will not only stop the garbage from slipping down, but it will also stop effluents flowing down and bringing filth with it along with garbage. On account of the downslide of the garbage, water from wells in the area has become unfit for human consumption. The wall will also provide a remedy to this problem.
It is impossible to undertake farming in the land that had been covered by garbage last year. Therefore, the city corporation, based on the report of experts, plans to acquire private land. There is also a suggestion to allow those who want to retain their land to exercise that option. Discussions are in progress on these matters.
