Mangaluru: Mega wall to stop Pachanady garbage slide permanently

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 20: The city corporation, alarmed by the serious threat posed to environment, people and properties by the huge landslide suffered by the city's garbage dump at Pachanady during August last year, has undertaken construction of a huge wall at the spot where the landslide happened. This wall is aimed at affectively stop recurrence of such incidents in future.

The project, undertaken at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore, may be completed in about two months’ time. It is planned to stop garbage heap from sliding downhill towards Mandara located about 700 metres away from the garbage dump. In the previous incident, houses, property etc were damaged and people had become homeless overnight.

People had demanded for the construction of the wall before the commencement of the next rainy season, but election to the corporation and coronavirus pandemic delayed the execution. The work has finally begun. The wall will not only stop the garbage from slipping down, but it will also stop effluents flowing down and bringing filth with it along with garbage. On account of the downslide of the garbage, water from wells in the area has become unfit for human consumption. The wall will also provide a remedy to this problem.

It is impossible to undertake farming in the land that had been covered by garbage last year. Therefore, the city corporation, based on the report of experts, plans to acquire private land. There is also a suggestion to allow those who want to retain their land to exercise that option. Discussions are in progress on these matters.

Considering the problem of the vicinity this project should have been commenced much earlier and completed by now. This is nothing but negligence

The Govt should have listened to the people of Pachanady Garbage before landslide. As usual the political arrogance failed before the man made disaster. Now a Mega wall to stop garbage slide. Will the Mega wall be built scientifically by some useless contractor to make money who will use inferior quality of material. Someone should keep a watch on this mega wall during course of construction.

The retaining wall is only a temporary solution. There is no land available to shift the Dump Yard near the city. and there is objection from the people in the vicinity.
MCC should consult the Civil Enginering Departments of several Engineering colleges in the area may be at a cost. to solve this problem..

The best solution is to use the Garbage for the Power generation as in the west.

Please do not go for short time solution. Think atleast beyond 50 years, when you implement any projects. Go for recycling, producing biogas etc. Also MCC should find a proper place away from the city for dumping the waste, and that too not in open ground.

Dirty water from decomposed garbage will seep into the soil below & contaminate surrounding areas & water bodies!
Also as the garbage absorbs water, it will gather weight & put tremendous load on the wall!

Pathetic, we are atleast 50 to 60 years behind compared to developed countries. At least shift garbage places far from city like 20 kilometres away with modern technology.

First of all educate people so that they themselves treat the garbage back at home or within their community "My Garbage My Responsibility" kind of campaign.Do it for one year and see the changes.

1.Educated people to stop throwing Plastic to garbage instead they can give that to gujuri shop for recycling.
2.Food waste can be collected locally and can be used as manure to nourish plants that are around city.
3.For oil waste educate people to collect those in cans and use those used oil for preparation of biodiesel.
4.Setup a local biogas plant,So that we can use those gas and fill it in cylinders for cooking purpose instead of dumping it like this.

If you need any help I can help you out here,I do item 1 & 2 as much as possible but for 3 & 4 needs investment and infrastructure which MCC should invest. These are also smart city ideas which MCC can think of.

Is any alternative to dumping garbage in this way found out ? For how many years will the MCC keep the heap rising higher and higher ? Is Mangalore a lone city that produces garbage ? Don't other cities/states/nations manage it ? Stop dumping it, adopt a way to dehydrate it and use as compost.

Dumping it will house germs and scavengers. If any disease hits these scavengers the whole city will be in trouble. Building a wall is a temporary measure. Until you stop dumping in the same location and not do anything about the accumulated garbage, the problem will persist permanently.

Money making schemes, will end with scam.
How big wall going to construct above the garbage level? why can you shift this garbage to prepare manure? already opp side unit is working as per government (dont know how much it works and how much manure exports)
Logic how this wall will protect garbage water from seepage to the wells ?
One more thing monsoon going to start soon.
same as first Ghanta then Diya and finally it comes one word Ghanta diya

Why not dump garbage away from housing areas ? Its not even healthy to live close to dump yard ? Why not look for better alternate dump area and construct proper dump year with 4.5 crore ?

Lot of people giving lot of suggestions here but practically how many people follow is a open question. Also people talk about developed countries how they are handling garbage etc. I haven't seen very effective segregation of wastes and recycle here in US. Advantage these people have is enough land to dump the garbage and less population compared to highly populated countries like India.
In India population is one of the biggest factor for most if the issues and that gets controlled then we have enough experts to find a solution for many such problems. Second thing, the level of Govt. bureaucracy one has to face if any private enterprise wants to setup industries to treat garbage and use it effectively.
