Dos and don'ts issued for re-opening salons in Karnataka

Bengaluru, May 20 (IANS): Karnataka on Tuesday issued an advisory for reopening barber shops/salons in the state from Wednesday after keeping them shut for 57 days due to lockdown that was extended thrice till May 31 to contain the coronavirus spread.

"In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, all barber shops, hair cutting salons and parlours should follow the latest guidelines of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs when reopening for business from Wednesday across the state except in containment zones," a Health Department official said.

As per the standard operating procedure (SOP), customers with fever, cold, cough and throat pain should not be allowed to enter the shop, and both customers and staff must wear masks, said the official.

The shops or salons should provide sanitisers at the entrance for customers to wash their hands before and after hair cutting or shaving by the barber or his staff.

The barber and his staff should wear face mask, head cover and apron at all times compulsorily, and disposable towel/paper sheet shall be used for each client.

All equipment shall be sanitised after each use on a client using 7 per cent Lysol for 30 minutes, and staff should sanitise their hands after every haircut.

It was also advised that appointments or token system be adopted to stagger clients entry, adequate spacing (at least 1 metre) shall be maintained for seating, and all common areas, floors, lifts, lounge/area, staircase, and handrails must be disinfected with 1 per cent sodium hypochlorite solution twice daily. Carpets and floor area shall be cleaned frequently.

Sharp waste, including blades and disposable razors, should be collected in puncture proof, leak proof white containers with 1 per cent sodium hypochlorite solution. The container, once three-fourth full, should be handed over to biomedical waste disposal agency.

Ths salons/shops should display posters at their entrance about cough etiquette and social distancing.

The barbers and their staff should visit the state government's dedicated portal -- https://karunadu.karnataka.gov.in/hfw for more details.

As part of the Rs 1,610-crore relief package to the Covid-affected sections of society, Chief Minister B.S.Yediyurappa on May 6 announced Rs 5,000 each for 2,30,000 barbers registered with the state government as a one-time compensation for suffering huge loss due to closure of their shops during the prolonged lockdown.

These do and don't are mandatory for barbar shops and beauty parlors. These must be followed to prevent cross contamination. I don't think barbars from rural area will follow it. Using sanitizer is good but it's better to use disposable ( single use) condumables and not to spray water while fine trimmings. And most important ..: better to spray surface disinfectant liquid containing ISO PROPHYL ALCOHOL /HYROGEN PEROXIDE/QAC/ SILVER NITRATE to kill Covid 19 virus on dressing table surfaces, consumables ,chairs and cash box.
It's better to start some CONTINUOUS COMMUNITY EDUCATION for risky service providers like barbers, restaurants, food providers etc.

All these strict guidelines will be impossible to follow practically by uneducated barbers; nobody is going to enforce them! Saloons already suffering from lack of business due to highly inflated rates of haircut/shaving!

Safest approach is to avoid salons till CORONA dust settled down!

Fomites ( transmission by touch & through instruments like even combs is possible even after a long time as virus is known to survive on various surfaces); sterilization of all these items scrupulously in a saloon is impossible!

The above is only a personal opinion!

All the saloon workers should undergo Covid-19 testing prior to reopening, and all saloon workers to have a Covid-19 test on bi-weekly basis. Results should be sent to the authorities. (Should be free test from Govt.)

The concern Authorities has to take tough action against saloon's that don’t follow the rules, specially in rural areas. They have to ensure the spaces are regularly disinfected and place stickers to help customers follow social distancing rules. Shoppers will have to wear face masks and gloves, while those aged above 60 years should not be allowed entry as they fall under the high-risk category.

The authorities should conduct regular inspections, to ensure the safety guidelines are followed or not. if not then they have to take legal action against the violators and immediately they have to cancel their commercial license.

Readers, will the barbershop, sincerely follow the guidelines of the state ??? Even if they do, they are certain to hike their service charges.... What is frightening is that there is absolutely no guarantee, that their salon will be 100% sanitized from Covid19 virus !!! The only safe option left, is to trim your own hair, at home, with the assistance of a family member.... Better play safe then be sorry later !!!!

Is it possible our barbers to follow the above guidelines.... Will they arrange all the necessary things mentioned in the article?? ...sanitising the instruments/solutions in the disposable bins etc....??? It's very risky. Either you grow your hair and put hairband or tie ponytail or bring a scissors ✂ and try to trim of your own. If it's not coming in shape wear a cap and go out on your daily routine......

    Cynthia, sensible comments!

A barber with clinical training in CORONA symptoms would be required to qualify a potential customer for a cut!

Also, who will certify the barbers health condition?

Till the CORONA phobia waxes, the saloons may not do good business; same had happened during when HIV phobia was at its peak; I still know people who never go to a saloon for a shave for fear of contracting HIV!peak

In today's Mumbai Midday, I saw a pic of Sachin Tendulkar giving a haircut to his son!

Rudolph Sir, best example is of Sachin. Better to do our own work as much as possible... You know, before corona also, these barbers never used to wash clothes what they cover.. Same cloth they use on those customers who are sitting on that chair one by one just flapping the cloth once or twice. And now, will they follow??
