Mangaluru: Migrants at Rosario Hall complain of being served rotten food by district administration

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, May 19: Following the nationwide lockdown that was enforced, the district administration made arrangements for stranded migrant workers and the homeless. Earlier in the week, as many as 250 migrants were shifted to Rosario Hall so that arrangements to send them back to their concerned states were made. However, the administration was unable to plan accordingly. The migrants complained that Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) supplied them rotten food.

Debash, one of the residents at the hostel and a migrant coolie worker said, "The food served by the administration in the nights is not edible. We receive a cup of half-boiled rice, salt and water mixed with chilli powder at night. The food has caused many women and children to fall ill. Several people residing here have refused to eat the food because of the bad quality. Not one official has visited our camp to enquire about our wellbeing. We found it difficult to convey our grievances to the administration.”

Mahanthesh, a migrant labourer from Jharkhand said, "In the noon, the church authorities provide us with lunch. The quality of the food is pleasant. It comforts us to get such homemade meals. Unfortunately, the meals provided by the administration is of inferior quality.

"There are a total of 250 migrants residing at Rosario Hall and there are only 10 toilets to accommodate all of us. It has become difficult for us to stay here with all these issues," he added.

Food supply from church authorities

The district administration had shifted the migrant workers to schools and halls around Mangaluru city. The migrants who are residing at Rosario and other Catholic halls are being served lunch by the church authorities. Meanwhile, the government has been assigned with the task of serving them dinner and the NGO’s have taken up the job of distributing breakfast to the migrants.

The members of St Antony ward, Milagres, distributed breakfast to about 600 migrants who gathered at Milagres College campus on Tuesday morning. John Monteiro, ward gurkar, Jude Fernandes, ward representative, Robert Castelino and Lionel Briggs were present.

    Just a Thought :
    1. Why the talented people amongst workers , valenteer and cook ?
then it may turnout to be easy for the Church authorities and other organisation .

    2. Also there are no people available in many small factories like block manufacturing etc to work , so they can earn as well ?
    3. construction and other like work has started , but no sand in mangalore and udupi, - DC should look into this . so the workers can start earning ?
    4. yes it is difficult for the stranded workers, but with humidity and heat , if the packed food is not handled properly it will be bad easily.
    5. also the pool of skilled workers can be created - and where there is demand , they can book them in advance , and transportation

others may have better ideas , just a humble thought.

We all have to help the needy. It is a virus made every person to bent down and help. By the way many Catholics and missionaries are helping around the world . Hope everyone opens thier eyes wide open to see the services of Christian's towards the sick, needy who is hungry, homeless and dire situations of abundaned. It is a time for those who used to label us conversion to repent and start helping the migrants best possible ways to feed them and stop worrying for tommorrow. every time I see a migrant suffering I feel sad and pray for thier safety. They are human same like us with families to feed. Govt is doing it's best. Due to mass population it is hard for govt to feed every soul but there are many people out there can donate instead of saving for next 25 generations of savings. Get generous people and help each other

First of all they are getting free food. I dont think they are getting rotten food. May times all we might have tasted rotten food in our life. No pointing in blaming anyone in this case. Atleast migrants are getting food and shelter in mangalore. What about local mangloreans who is suffering from poverty. Poor must understand that someone is helping by feeding them. We should learn to live happy with available resources. These labours are earning 500-100 rupees per day and have they started crying from the 1st day of lock down. They have not saved any money for rainy days?

10 toilets only for 100 people. You cannot just dump people and they have to suffer , not at all acceptable. Please arrange to send them to their respective states . If govt. Cannot supply one time food for migrants then shame on them.

Migrant workers may not have votes in Mangalore or Chickmagalur constituency. So, why these two have to come? And the Desh Bhakts or Andh Bhakts have to save themselves from COVID-19, otherwise who will be there to fight for the country?

PM Modi should take personal responsibility. On Day Zero of Lockdown, wasn't it Modi who promised people to stay back and everyone will be looked after ? Now, the promise needs to be fulfilled and these migrants need decent and good quality 3 meals a day.

Before someone mentions that the migrants should not have moved out - ask yourself what you would do if you lost your home, had no money to get food supplies and were treated as a burden on the society and city's resources - which self-respecting person would subject themselves to such humiliation ? I applaud (taali, thali) both the covid warriors and also the laborers & migrants who have helped build and develop my city and nation.

Dont know whom to blame here. If they cannot manage, why take in extra burden of Serving Non Veg when its more of a Perishable item compared to veggies. its a matter of survival. Service them Rice , Ganji , Dhal & Chapathi and occasionally some veg curries. Am sure they will manage with it temporarily. Dont try to cut cost by serving expired dated poultry items and create one more mess of food poisoning.
