Mangaluru: Rains wreak havoc as fruits, vegetables destroyed at APMC yard

Daijiworld Media Network- Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, May 18: Rains coupled with wind that lashed the city in the morning on Monday May 18, badly damaged vegetables and fruits at Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) yard in Baikampady which were brought for sale.

Vendors who had come from various parts of the districts to start weekly sale, faced heavy losses after their produce got washed away into drains as many of them were unable to shift the fruits and vegetables bags to safer places before the heavy downpour began.

“We have lost vegetables worth over thousands of rupees due to the sudden rain as we were not prepared for it. The district administration shifted the market from Mangaluru central market over here few weeks ago as a measure to prevent spreading of coronavirus. But after the shifting was done, the district administration is least bothered about the facilities and issues at APMC here,” said Raghava, a fruit vendor who came from Car Street.

“First of all there is a heavy decline in business after coronavirus outbreak. We are forced to run our business here at APMC by the district administration. For the sake of public safety, we agreed to the same. Today’s rain should be an eye opener for the administration. They should act quickly and make arrangements for smooth trade in the upcoming rainy season,” said Abdul Jabbar, a vegetable vendor.

Administration must give weather forecast to vegetable sellers like fishermen. So on particular time they must avoid the sales and keeping stock. We want educated representative to guide us. That is the main problem. And no understanding between the administration.

MCC not even put tiles or tar on ground. It's a simple commonsense. They just want to construct new market sanctioning crores of Rupees.
No money to do some basic facilities. Is there any consultant for MCC?

There are so many empty buildings why these vendors are not allowed in these buildings. Charge decent rent/tax for them and allow them inside the buildings. chamchas nowadays just looking for unnecessary issues. Have you visited the central market earlier during the rain? The condition was worst than this with bad rotten smell everywhere.

all the politicians should be blamed for not providing basic facilities ,atleast they should have concern to come and visit the following yard and helping the vendors out.
Myself visited the yard this morning people don’t have proper toilets to use,.And this is the way we are fighting covid-19 with zero hygiene .vegetables fallen on floor in this yard and people are going to eat the same

This is unbelievable but true that this rain has caused a terrible loss for the vendors who had come to APMC yard to make their weekly purchase of fruits and vegetable. Already their business has come down due to COVID-19. This will have a great effect on everyone who buy fruits and vegetables for their daily needs. I felt very bad looking at the pictures of the good being washed away in the floods caused by this rain. Thanks to Daijiworld for posting the pictures.

It’s sad to see the traders go thru hardship at the APMC Yard Baikampady, but we thank the MCC for providing alternate arrangements in these days of lock down and shifting the veg and fruit market and making it available to the general public. The major concern however is the fruits market being operating at APMC the traders have started selling their fruits in the two main roads and the footpaths inspite of apmc having a spacious market area. The police too have not been seriously implementing traffic parking rules to Traders who have started blocking the approach roads and the footpaths with absolutely no regard for social distancing norms.

Since more than fifteen days clouds were there here in coastal areas sometimes with drizzles and almost everyday with lightning.... Why proper arrangements are not done when knowing rains are very near...?0 Even there was a news of cyclone... Rains are right they showed signs much before its arrival Why humans were lagged behind for preparation of the same...? Always crying/blaming/screaming loss happened.. loss happened. For your negligence please don't hold responsible for the rain which is accurate on its arrival... Understand the nature... and live with the nature... Consider you people are lucky enough rain came very late here whereas other places rained much in advance... We are not happy at all times..
