Daijiworld impact: Pregnant women to be sent for home quarantine if they test negative

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS/SD)

Bengaluru, May 13: Following complaints against the district administration of Dakshina Kannada that it did not make proper arrangements to receive the NRIs, who arrived from Dubai on the night of Tuesday, May 12 at the international airport here, the state government issued revised standard operating procedure (SOPs) for international returnees.

Earlier, during the day, two pregnant women who came in the flight on Tuesday night, had called up Daijiworld TV and narrated their ordeal on what they went through at the airport. The videos became viral and the authorities were compelled to take quick action.

Dubai passengers at Mangaluru airport on May 12

Soon, in a circular, the Health and Family Welfare Services department issued revised standard operating procedure (SOPs) for international returnees. It said, “All international passengers who are asymptomatic shall be stamped and be subjected to 14 days of institutional quarantine in COVID care centres.

“Further, to the above SOP, relaxation is being made for asymptomatic passengers. Immediately on passengers’ arrival which include pregnant women, children below the age of 10 years and below, senior citizens the age of 80 years and above and terminally ill patients (cancer, chronic kidney disease and stroke), they shall be tested using RT-PCR technique as early as possible and if the test is negative, they shall be exempted from institutional quarantine. Such passengers shall be stamped and sent for home quarantine for 14 days from the date of their arrival. All such passengers shall also be subjected to check up by a medical team (symptoms / temperature/oxygen saturation),” said the circular.

Earlier, the woman, who conveyed her ordeal to Daijiworld said, “I reached Mangaluru international airport at 10 pm on May 12. There were no issue from Dubai to airport. We expected that all arrangements will be made at Mangaluru International Airport to receive us. However, when we arrived to Mangaluru, there was no arrangement. I am seven and half months pregnant. I reached the airport at 10 pm but was sent to hotel at 2.10 am. We have waited for four hours. None of the departments in the airport were functioning in a proper manner.

“"As my husband is working in Dubai, I had to come alone. Our luggage had to be carried by us only. No one helped me even after noticing that I am pregnant. We were told that food will be provided free of cost. However, when I went to have meals they demanded money. I did not have cash with me. We knew through media that hostel and hotel arrangements are done for us at Mangaluru. There was only one hotel and no choices. The room rent in that hotel was Rs 1,000. There was no option of hotels with lesser tariff.

"There was KSRTC bus arrangement to go to the hotel. However, the bus was driven too fast because of which I suffered pain as I am pregnant. So I have come to Wenlock for check-up. As house members are not allowed with passengers I have come alone to the hospital. I have come with the ambulance personnel to the hospital. As I am pregnant I cannot move alone. Someone has to be there with me. This has to be brought to the notice of the concerned authorities,” she said.

Another pregnant woman who also arrived in the same flight with her husband who also had medical emergency, expressed her grievance to Daijiworld and exposed the failure of the district administration and concerned authorities.

Even if they found negative, it may be asymptomatic case and in home quarantine they will spread the virus to others very easily. Since they have come to their home country with government's great efforts, what is the problem in following government rules? These people will simply will put others in problem.

First of all I would like appreciate Daijiworld.com for bringing this issue to the administrative notice.

Many of these passengers are home bound for medical assistance for other ailments. Some ladies are pregnant and need proper care. Some even lost jobs not paid their due salaries and end of service benefits. Then the helpless old age and kids.

Then V.P. Singh government has never even considered charging the Indians stuck in Kuwait in 1990 for no fault of their own. Not only is Modi charging Indians stranded abroad by COVID-19 but also the millions of poor trapped by his lockdown decision.

It is injustice for the part of stranded NRI's to herded to lodges who are on short leave forced to spend 14 days expenses bared by them for no fault of their own.

I would suggest all the passengers who test negative should be given free passage to his/her residence and self quarantined under supervision of local health authority. It is unethical to spend on something when they need save the money for the future. This is the time every penny counts.

Readers not all who return from the middle east have jobs or money to spend, many of them are poor and not paid their wages. So to charge them for their return journey and over and above the high Quarantine hotel charges is not the way we need to treat our fellow Indians who have no where to go.Most of the passengers returning were either looking out for jobs or due to this Pandemic are returning back to their motherland emptyhanded and end up borrowing for their extra stay !!!

When there is pregnant women, kids, old people.. etc the district administration should have kept in mind and take some necessary steps for them and I feel that there was no necessary steps taken for them... At least the airport officials should have shown a little humanity to the people.... Not acceptable by the Airport officials and we need answers from MANGALORE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION...

    Sharada,

You don't die if you are not infected by COVID-19 Virus ???....

COVID-19 virus is just like Flu virus....which has a Vaccination....but Virus mutates and Vaccine will be ineffective within a year....so a new Vaccine is needed every year to stay on top of Flu Virus...

Death rate of COVID-19 is about 4 % , mostly in elderly people...Flu 0.4%....again mostly with elderly people....who would have died natural death with or without COVID-19 except few rare cases...

US has more than a million COVID-19 cases because 10 million people were tested....and about 80 thousand deaths mostly elderly people with history of respiratory ailments ....

When you test 10 Million people, lets see who has higher COVID-19 infection rates US or India....

Last but not least....we should be fully aware....for any human... death is certainty...So don't take seriously hibernation, hotel quarantine, evolution, Bats, China, Trump, Modiji, Yeddy, Eshwarappa etc....and be mentally prepared to meet your CREATOR...

Even if the fatality rate is low , Why risk others lifes ? Everyone's life is precious , even the aged and people with other health issues . Everyone should act responsibly to prevent from spreading it to the aged unknowingly . So it's better for foreign returnees to be institutional quarantined , and for officials to make needed arrangements according to their budget or for free .

By compelling quarantine to "Covid negative" people to unknown/unseen hotels/hostels/ schools etc may result in they too may reach home as patients after 14 days, since the safety of attending staffs or resources deployed for safety may not be trustworthy. Moreover, how a family can afford such costs even at the cheapest places of quarantine. Better let negative people observe quarantine at their respective homes only which is much safer than hotels or any other forms of quarantine.
So along with Covid negative pregnant women, other negative passengers too need to be considered.

Daiji has grown up from all these years being in the journalism profession, meeting various people from highest to lowest and facing hard social challenges and brining to focus grievances of general public and with all it's resources, capabilities and skills should move to a higher level. It's only natural for organization like Daiji to transit to next level as it has pushed its own bar higher. If you call it politicizing then I call it serving the people with greater strength.

    People,

I know I will get few hundreds of 'Disagrees' for this comment....So be it...I need to express my opinion here with clear conscience and truthfully...

These Gulf passengers are tested negative to COVID-19 test, before they are allowed to board the plane to Mangalore....

So there is ABSOLUTELY no SENSE....in forcefully Quarantining then in Mangalore hotels...other than making them to spend more of their hard earned money in these difficult times....and making some profit to these hotel owners....

They should be made to wear masks and gloves and sent home with social distancing guidance ....and ask them to be in home Quarantine....If they go out punish them...

This is what they do all over the world....except in India...Don't know why....

I have seen this since my childhood....ALWAYS....our Babu's think prime reason for them in service is to make others life difficult...be it Police, Government officials or Politicians....I have never seen this behavior in any other Country unfortunately...

    Roshan, Dubai,

I believe they are conducting COVID-19 test using Abbott Lab test kits....Its not blood test....Sample taken with a probe from nose or throat....You get results in 10 minutes....if you are COVID-19 Negative it takes 5 minutes, for Positive it takes 10 minutes....

This test is 100% accurate even in Asymptomatic COVID-19 Carriers....this is latest test invented by Abbott Labs in US before a month....earlier it used to take 2 days to get the results...now 10 minutes...

With this test with 100 % accuracy and within 10 minutes hotel Quarantine in Mangalore for 14 days is an absolutely stupid idea by our good for nothing Babu's....They like more processes we used to call this Permit & License raj....to allow officials and politicians to get some cuts....

I believe this is the test ....they conduct in Dubai Airport before allowing passengers to board planes to India....

    ...Tak...Takk....

Most of the challenges that Covid-19 virus poses can be solved if the administration has some common sense. Treatment itself does not need a super speciality hospital. Any hospital can treat this virus. Only thing to be taken care of is to make sure the virus does not spread from one person to another. This just needs common sense to tackle. Whole process of moving a suspected patient or confirmed patient needs to be documented and followed very strictly. This virus started in December 2019 and district administration still dont have any procedure documented and followed.

This where Kerala has had an upper hand on controlling the virus spread. covid cases are treated only in govt hospitals. While DK has many super speciality hospitals and government hospitals lack quality treatment, it is other way round in Kerala. They have very less speciality hospitals, however government hospital treatment is of good quality. Secondly our administration doesnot have futuristic view for planning efficiently, Kerala administration is always proactive.
