Mangaluru, Apr 27: A team led by former MLA J R Lobo went to Merlapadavu near Neermarga on the outskirts of the city and bought organic produce of local farmers. More than 80 families are depended in this area only on agriculture.

The former MLA said, "According to the direction of D K Shivakumar, president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), the work of making the local produce reach the needy people is done by the party. This attempt was done in order to encourage the local farmers, who have grown the produce with hard work, though the environment in the district of Dakshina Kannada is not conducive for growing vegetables and also for the fact that the market was shifted to APMC at Baikampady which is quite far from Merlapadavu."

The local farmers also gave away various vegetables at cheap prices to the Congress workers thereby joining hands in the fight against coronavirus pandemic.

T K Sudheer, Vishwas Kumar Das, Prakash B Salian, Denis D'Silva, Krithin Kumar, Uday Kumar, Raghuraj Kadri, Rajesh Kadri, Samarth Bhat, Nagendra, Santhosha Neermarga and Leslie Rego were present on the occasion.

The organic vegetables that were bought by the Congress workers were distributed to White Doves, Snehalaya and Prashant Nivas orphanages in the city.

I think Former MLA J R Lobo deserves one more term for his humanity and work. Many young generation don't now the history of former Prime Minister Lal Bahdur Shastri. One of the great leader whose 'Jai Kisan, Jai Jawan' slogan transformed India into 'Food basket' from the wheat import from United State.
Today this humble step of Mr.Lobo is really encouraging considering the apathy of the farmers of India who are selling their hard tilled products below the cost.
In my view every township should have organized fresh product market, were local farmers can sell their products directly without middle man.
I appreciate Mr.Lobo and the Congress workers for helping local farmers to give real meaning to vision of Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.

FYI, Lobam is not a vegetable merchant. He is very much in opposition but doing the ruling govt's job better than going round the country side with begging bowl.

Do they have a license from MCC.? Those who don't pay taxes or rent should be able to sell much cheaper. but this hurts those who pay taxes and rent to MCC.

    Swati,

Do you pay taxes ? When you don't for an obvious reason, please understand that local growers too have a right to sell their produce in their local co-operative markets, by law. They are not exporting or selling it in public markets that you are pointing out their mode of evading taxes.

I went to a local two famous tea shop in Mangalore. Still, they give bill on a small slip of a square paper and there is no item is mentioned on it only the amount. They make lacs in a day. Do you think they still pay tax? .Even you go to a medical consultant, he does not give a bill and does he pay tax. There are so many professions like this. Tax is only for salaried people who do the donkey's job.

i remember one gang of people going to a school which was conducting a fancy fete and they had brought food for selling from their homes. The goons of a political party entered the school and harassed the students and asked whether they are registered to sell the items and are they paying GST. So rules are made for one category of people and not applicable

Mr. Lobo is right. Today I purchased a ring of Indian Spinach (Basale) from a roadside vender. He charged me Rs. 35/- On my way ahead, in a vegetable shop, I checked how much the same item costed - I was told Rs. 50/- This is the condition of our local growers.

Hereafter, I will make sure that I buy from roadside local venders, always.

Tell Trump that Basale can fix Covid, who knows, he may fall for it and import all our Basale, may even issue retaliatory threats if we fail to meet his demands! Good for our farmers in any case.

JR Lobo should inform the general public that there is a sale of local vegetables at particular place and also time, there would be a huge crowd and the local farmers would earn well and benefit from it.
Our current elected Representatives can also arrange something like this.

    Dylan,

Outskirts of Mangalore (i.d. Neermarga, Gurpur, Bajpe, Kateel) have 'Santhe' (Fair) on one day of the week. Local residents go shopping to buy their weekly requirements of fruits/vegetables on designated days. If you enquire with a place nearest to you, you will know.

Its only in the city that every day is santhe.

Deshbhakt, now santhes are not allowed.... because of lock down. Some volunteers with the pass, can bring the vegetables from there and can sell to the people in cities, going through their vehicles. Definitely, people will buy. Everyone can't go to Merlapadavu... or to the places of these vegetable farms...
