Mangaluru: Cruise ship employee from Kalladka seeks government help to return

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 17: Jayaprakash from Kalladka in Bantwal taluk of Dakshna Kannada district, Jayaprakash, who has been employed by Royal Caribbean Cruise ship currently at Miyami in USA is waiting to come back home. "We are spending time inside the ship at sea since the last 32 days. Because of coronavirus scare, none of the countries including the USA are allowing us entry into their ports. We want to go back to our motherland. I sincerely wish that the government of India facilitates our safe passage," Jayaprakash pleads.

Jayaprakash, who said he has been working for the said cruise ship for the last six years, recollects that life was good till coronavirus problem erupted. Speaking to a Kannada daily over phone from inside the ship, he said he was visiting his family once in six months. He says he and many of his fellow workers are stuck inside the ship and requests the Indian government to airlift them from there.

Jayaprakash said that people from several other countries were with him but all of them have gone back to their homes with the support of their governments. "Our company is prepared to send us to India by chartered plane but because of lockdown in India, we are not getting permission. We request the central government to evince interest and see that we get an opportunity to fly back to India," he said.

Jayaprakash says that his company has been taking care of food, medicine and other requirements of the people inside the ship, and all the staff are under quarantine. He said that about 450 among the employees in the ship are Indians. "Our American company owns 36 ships," he stated, adding that he and his fellow workers are ready to meet quarantine conditions that may be imposed once they reach India.

Friend, there are around 20,000 indian seafarers onboard various cruise ships. It is not possible to govt to airlift everyone. Please remember bad times also part of sealife. Atleast you are getting good food, accommodation and also salary and company of other indians. So don't trouble govt of India unnecessarily.

Jayaprakash, I feel sorry that you and others are held up in the ship since last 32 days or so as you enter the port due to restrictions and fear of coronavirus. It is better to stay aboard the luxury cruise ship. It is a fantastic ship and I have traveled with my wife some years back from New York by air and then by Royal Caribbean cruise ship from Miami, Mexico and other islands. I think it is better to wait till things become alright. Even if are allowed to leave and fly to India you will have to go through the process in both countries which will take at least a month. This quarantine will make you bored up till you reach your final destination. Good luck Jayaprakash.

Very unfortunate that these cruise guys r trapped! IMHO, since your co is taking good care of you & considering the pressure we r facing, it's better to stay out there untill things settle down!

I simply cannot digest one thing - why is India not allowing its own citizens to land or go back from where them came from - every other country welcomes its citizens. Its wrong to think that overseas people especially Indians will be carrying this so called corona virus along with them once they land. There is always the path of self isolation. Indians overseas who are stuck need some empathy. While other countries can I am sure India can too.

Royal Caribbean is the 2nd largest cruise liner in the world. They are taking care of their employees, now and in all eventualities. Hence, I feel, this gentleman is much safer than the total population outside the ship.

Terence, Mangalore, I partly agree with your comments. But it is circumstances that has made Jayaprakash and others made them held up off shore. Neither India or US can take a chance by allowing them in their land due to COVID-19, the killer disease. As I mentioned in my comment earlier he and others are better off in the ship till everything comes to normal.

Jaya Prakash sir, lockdown is not permanent. Have patience. You will come back home. Many are stuck here and there. Our only chance to fight Corona is lockdown as of now.
