PM Modi to announce decision over lockdown on Apr 12, extension likely

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi (SHP)

New Delhi, Apr 10: After Modi had the first round of discussions regarding the lockdown, it was stated that the final call on extending the 21-day lockdown would be taken only after the Prime Minister had deliberated on the matter with the chief ministers of different states on Saturday, Apr 11. Although the extension of the lockdown is being strongly suggested by health experts as well as the state heads, an official announcement on the same is likely to be done on Sunday evening.

The lockdown if extended could, however, come with some sector-specific relaxations as a prolonged shutdown will have massive economic repercussions. Interstate movement will continue to remain restricted, except for essential services, sources have said.

Meanwhile, Odisha on Thursday had become the first state to extend the lockdown till April 30, just two days before video-conference meeting between Modi and other chief ministers.

Another chief minister who strongly advised the extension is Telangana’s, K Chandrashekar Rao. "The Centre and all other state governments have lost revenue during the lockdown period. The only positive outcome of this is that we are able to protect our people," he said.

He also cited a study by the Boston Consulting Group, which said the extension of the lockdown should be at least till the end of June. “Lockdown is the only weapon we have to control the spread of this disease and avoid a situation which countries like the US, Spain and Italy are facing," he said at a news conference.

However, the Maharashtra government is considering lifting the lockdown in phases, where the supply of essential services such as gas cylinders are streamlined first. Following which will be those sectors that cannot rely on work from home. But, local trains, schools and colleges will remain shut for longer.

“Precautions should be taken that there is no crowding," CM Thackeray tweeted, referring to the possibility of if the lockdown lifted in phases.

Modi had in an all-party meeting told floor leaders of the opposition and other parties in Parliament that the nationwide lockdown will not be lifted in one go on April 14, according to BJD's Pinaki Misra.

However, the government has not made any assertion on whether it is going to extend the current lockdown or not. Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said his government will extend the lockdown if the need arises, while his counterpart in Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot said the state cannot withdraw the lockdown immediately, and it has to be done in a phased manner.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said in its monetary policy report that the outlook for India's economic recovery has been sharply altered by the coronavirus outbreak and the resulting lockdown

Any decision in the interest of the citizens health care is much welcomed. But no more claps, candles or anything that doesn't have 'scientific approach'.

I would appreciate Prime Minister this time announce some comprehensive economy package to the corers of migrant workers returned to their villages without any jobs. If the central government can make loan wavier for crony industrialist why not the poor of this nation?

Please given the nation enough time to prepare for crisis. Don't give the surprise announcing just before 12 midnight.

Yesterday, was the 100th day from the first case in Kasargod, Kerala in a student who returned from Wuhan, which means the virus landed in India around that time not only in Kerala but scattered across the country since people were freely moving at that time both nationally & internationally! Considering the virulence of CORONA, it might have spread very fast in the general population without we being aware, though alarm bells were rung by a couple of prominent people as early as end January, which was not taken seriously; forget, no use of crying over spilt milk! In the interim, CORONA might have infected many people across the country; many survived, some died (since CORONA was not known at that time), those who died directly & indirectly might have been attributed to viral/bacterial pneumonia & other related causes! Only when CORONA got into the limelight did we start checking for it seriously both clinically & with testing! Since the first incident to the lockdown (100-17); for 83 days, CORONA might have infected multitude of our population most of whom were asymptomatic, some had mild to moderate symptoms; only some may have had serious symptoms! Which means by the time we lockeddown, many got immunity; those weak died; and the infection continued!
Hypothetically, if we got the virus around the same time as other countries, our mortality rate should have been much more than the advanced countries considering our population, poverty, malnutrition, hygiene, ignorance etc.?? Considering the above + the grim economic situation, starvation, unemployment, trapped migrants, failure of all sectors, most importantly the agrarian, fishing, MSMEs, etc it's imperative, we take a very holistic & pragmatic decision as any further blanket lockdown across the country could lead to a very serious situation of deaths due to starvation, other infections, and chances of social unrest!
Hope our leaders will take a very calculated decision in everyones interest! Jai Hind!

Everybody is waiting for the decision to be taken by PM Modi on whether the lockdown will be extended fully or partially. It will all depend on which district is safe or still the COVID-19 is not completely free from the virus. This is a vital issue.

In the current situation, this outbreak should not be used for scoring political brownie points. Everyone should work together towards a common goal of protecting Our citizens. May god protect us all and pass through this difficult phase.

Lockdown extension OK. But no essential commodities are available in local shops. Though DC has told that everything is available, no such arrangements are made. Due to this people are suffering.

Essential commodities available in plenty to a selected few, but not to you and me. This can change only if lockdown is lifted. It is like gold smuggling , when customs duty was removed it had stopped now with duty reimposed it has started again.Straightforward people can survive only in a free environment. When there are restrictions only blackmarketeers, antisocial and of course corona get an upper hand.

Lockdown without any plans to random/rigorous tests is hardly of any use. It looks like authorities are buying time to procure PPE and setting up of hospitals which are required immediately. I pay to Almighty God to relieve mankind of any sufferings.

Lockdown even for 6 months will only do more harm than good for the people, nation, and economy esp for 1.3 billion indian population of which more than 60% are poorest of the poor, and 39% are only below middle class, middle class, and upper middle class.
How will govt feed the poor and the unemployed, and SME businesses going on losses? By melting the iron content of sardar vallabai statue?

The 21 day lockdown was suggested by some experts, this experiment has failed,as there is a talk of extension.Even if there is a lockdown for 12 months where is the guarantee that the same or a different strain of virus will not reappear? If at all a lockdown is considered it should be restricted to a small area(containment zone) of a town or city , lockdown of a whole town, city , state or country is like using a hammer to kill a fly.The human brains have gone into lockdown mode ,let new solutions emerge so new set of real experts should be brought in,this time the doctors should be from hospitals like JJ,Sion or KEM Mumbai or silimilar hospital elsewhere, the doctors apart from theoretical knowledge should have practical clinical experience of treating at least 100 patients per day.The team should include representatives from all sections of the society including the poor, the middle class and the rich.Representatives from all professions and businesses including truckers, manufacturers and of course the small store owner who provided us milk grocery and veggies in crisis times, should be invited.Politicians should be excluded. An out of the box solution will emerge. What India should do cannot be dictated from Boston and from 5 star hospitals in India.Let us make this a real "Make in India" programme. ..Be Happy Be Healthy,Be Wise.

Whatever it is,you may safely assume it's the "People of the Nation First"
Principle that will be followed by Modiji .
Trump ,Boris put the " Economy First " approach and look what happened ! The death rate is staggering and two of the most powerful men in the world are powerless ! These people were worried about their stock markets more than anything else and look where it has brought them !

Bhandarkmaam, probably you fall in the lucky few (25%) who fall in the formal sector; if you were from the informal sector or daily wagers constituting 75-78% of our population, your comments would have been otherwise! Please remove your horseblinders & think from the point of view of those 75% who are on the verge of starvation!

Please consider the common man of the nation before any hasty decision with ill timing. During 'Demonetization' it was surprise and total chaos. The lock down for 21 days has only four hours to prepare for the citizen when the nation go to bed.

It is to be noted that India recorded its first case of #COVID19 on January 30, 2020. But throughout February, the Central Government failed to act to curb the spread of the virus or make preparations to deal with it.

He listed the events held by the BJP and the government. “Instead the Central Government organised large crowds and rallies to greet US President Trump, exposing thousands to the danger of the virus. The supporters of the ruling BJP- led “communal” mobs in North East Delhi in February.

This lock down does not clarify the government strategy to contain the community spread of the virus. There are no promising future for the crores of migrant worker without work whereas the neighboring Pakistan started direct transfer of Rs 12,000 to account with three months ration.

Why there is no transparency in 'PM Cares fund' on day to basis?

We all support the nation in this crisis. Is center government is away from the responsiblity?

Let us hope that all decisions made and further measures which will be announced by PM tomorrow will be in the best interest of the nation and its citizens. Definitely there should be something to unburden the hardships which the common man is facing due to tight lock down measures, which definitely have proved effective in combating spread of the dreaded Covid-19.
